Ghost Did a Number on Me—and I Think He’ll Do the Same to You
I recently met Ghost for only the second time in three years at our vaccination clinic and adoption event. I expected to spend a little time with him and move on to everything else happening that day.
Instead, he completely won me over—and I haven’t been able to get him out of my head.
Ghost is one of the sweetest, calmest dogs I have ever met. A cat sat nearby, and although Ghost has not had much cat exposure to my knowledge, he remained calm. He was curious about the other dogs, especially the puppies, but never in a wild or overly excited way. He simply watched them with gentle interest.
Ghost is almost completely deaf, although he can hear certain frequencies. But spend a few minutes with him and you quickly realize that his intelligence, awareness, and ability to connect with people completely overshadow his hearing loss. He pays attention to eye contact, touch, body language, and the people around him.
Ghost doesn’t need to hear your voice to understand kindness.
He is a gentle soul wrapped in a bully body—the kind of dog who makes you feel trusted simply by choosing to sit beside you. Whoever is lucky enough to give Ghost a home will gain one of the most loyal, loving, and quietly devoted companions imaginable.
I am already at my household limit for dogs, and yet I am seriously considering whether I need to sell my house and move somewhere I can legally add one more—just so I could spend more time with Ghost. That is how deeply this boy affected me.
And I have a feeling that if you meet him, he will do a number on you too.
Ghost entered rescue before he was fully grown. He is now 8½ years old and has spent nearly his entire life waiting for someone to choose him. He has grown into a calm, affectionate, laid-back senior who enjoys:
🚗 Relaxing car rides
🧸 Carrying and gently tossing his toys
🛋️ Lounging quietly near his people
❤️ Forming deep, trusting bonds
Because Ghost cannot always hear another dog’s warnings or vocal cues, introductions to other animals must be thoughtful and carefully managed. He may be happiest as an only dog, although a calm, respectful canine companion could possibly be considered after careful introductions. His reaction to the nearby cat was very encouraging, but additional evaluation and a responsible introduction would still be needed.
