This is an expense that we did not expect, and will set us back. The estimate (but we do not have the printout yet) is approximately $2,500. 2/6/26 - Nico wanted to send in a picture of his adorable face and tell everyone happy Friday. He said Valentine’s Day is coming up and he’s wanting to know who wants him to be theirs? ❤️ 12/5/25 - Nico is all trimmed up and ready for his new home for Christmas!! 9/10/25 - Nico is a total sweetheart with a gentle heart and a love for both companionship and a good belly rub. He thrives in the company of other dogs and would do wonderfully in a home with furry siblings—but he’d also be just as happy soaking up all the love as your one-and-only pup. As long as he’s getting attention, he’s content! He sleeps in his cozy collapsible crate but won’t say no to an occasional snuggle on the bed. He eats like a champ—two meals a day, and not a single crumb left behind! When home alone, Nico settles in happily in a spacious laundry room with water, and a puppy pad. He actually loves going in there, especially when a treat is involved. He’s never left for too long, though—this guy has a solid routine and does best with regular check-ins and potty breaks every few hours. Nico has blossomed socially—he was initially drawn more to women (likely from his past), but he’s now a fan of everyone, especially if they give good pets and better belly rubs. He’s also discovered the joy of toys! His favorite pastime? Shaking rubber squeaky toys with all the gusto he can muster. He’s mostly house-trained and does great with regular potty breaks, though like many pups, he may have an occasional accident if not let out often enough. He enjoys relaxing outdoors and watching the world go by—especially through the see-through fence. Evenings are often spent lounging outside, taking it all in. Nico does use a harness and leash, but walking on leash is still a work in progress. He’ll need a bit of patience and positive reinforcement to build his confidence. He’s more of a homebody than an adventurer—car rides make him a bit timid at first, but once settled in his car seat, he rides well (especially on longer trips). He’s not much of a jumper—he avoids stairs and can’t get onto tall furniture without a little help. But don’t worry—he’ll happily sit beside you (or even on your lap!) as long as you’re giving him attention. He doesn’t like to be held too much, but he’s fine with it and will politely oblige with his signature awkward stance. Nico gives the sweetest kisses and often “returns the favor” when you pet him by offering gentle licks. He’s a talker when it comes to deer or neighbors, but listens well when asked to quiet down. Noises don’t bother him much, but if you’re sweeping or vacuuming—watch out! He might try to “help” by going after them. Inside, he follows his person like a shadow—even into the bathroom—and will gladly curl up in another room if he knows you are nearby. He bonds deeply and is happiest when he’s included in daily life. He greets visitors with tail wags and excitement. He will take medicine like a pro with a pill pocket, tolerates teeth brushing, and is generally easy-going when it comes to care. Nico is a pleaser at heart—he just wants to be a good boy and be near his people. He’s still learning, still growing, and always loving. 10/1/24 - 10/1/24 - Nico went for his check-up today and they did x-rays on both legs and all looks AMAZING! He is now clear from any restrictions!! Time to run and play. 6/26/24 - Hey everyone. Nico here. I went to the specialist on Monday and he gave me some news that I’ve somewhat heard before, but frankly was surprised. It seems my left acl is torn and on my right, there is a partial tear. You would not really know it. I am the happiest little man and love running and playing, but yep, somehow, I’ve managed to mess up both back legs. So, the plan is that on July 1st, just around the corner, the doctor will operate on my left leg and then I will have to rest for 4 weeks. Then we will look into fixing the right. I know this is going to cost a lot, but my foster mom said that I am worth it and that it is important to fix them now before it gets worse. So, if you don’t mind, say a couple prayers for me and think of me on July 1st. I’d really appreciate it. I’ve been in my foster home long enough now to give everyone an update on what my personality and the permanent home that would fit me best. I am currently in a foster home with other dogs and I am doing great with them. I tend be passive, as I don’t mind other dogs in my space, but if one of them shows any “warning” signs, I will match that energy. So, let’s just say, I won’t start it, but I can finish it. I love sleeping in the bed with foster mom and the other fur-babies. I am a hearty eater and I clean my bowl every time. My idea of playing with toys is to pick up one, shake it around a little bit and then walk away. Foster mom says that I am doing well in the potty-training department, but do have a few accidents here and there. I’m blaming these on a little anxiety when my person leaves right at first. Also, don’t even think about opening the door for me to go out to potty on my own. Not going to happen. I need my person with me or I’m not going. I’m really attached to foster mom, but if you want to know a secret, I love all people! So, if you like giving and getting attention, and don’t mind a handsome shadow, you just might be the person for me. Just no little ones in the house please. They make me nervous and I’m just not myself around them. Foster mom says I walk fine on a leash, but can be timid when outside the house. It’s too hot outside right now anyway. Let’s just go in the backyard and sit on the patio furniture. I love laying on the couch with my human, but I’ll need a little help getting up and down. I will occasionally use the doggy stairs, but I’d rather just be picked up. Truth be told, I would lay in my human’s lap ALL DAY LONG if they would let me. Not a huge kisser currently. Guess I just never learned that activity, but I do watch my foster fur-siblings kiss on foster mom and it seems like fun. Apartment life probably isn’t for me since I do know how to use my voice. When I see anyone passing by, I let them know that they will not be arriving unnoticed. Household noises don’t really faze me. Oh, I’m also vey good taking a bath and being groomed. Truth be told, I love spa day. Pamper me all you want. Foster mom is always telling me how smart I am. She’s right, and I don’t mind hearing it. I kind of dance to the beat of my own drum. I’m usually the first one to do things and don’t need another dog to follow me. To sum me up, I’m just a happy, sweet, handsome guy that is looking for a mom and or dad to adopt and love me. We can turn from strangers into family without the same blood, but with the same love. Are you that special someone who will give me a second chance at life and a new beginning? 4/30/24 - Nico came to YHR because he was not happy sharing time and space with the 3 small grandchildren coming to his previous home. Also, he had supposedly torn both of his ACLs and needed to visit a specialist to see if they were in fact torn and needed surgery and that was just all too much. He’s now in his foster home and his evaluation with the specialist is scheduled for May 2nd. Then we will definitely know what needs to be done and we can get on it. He is a very happy boy in his foster home and is fine around the other dogs. He loves sleeping in the bed with his foster mom and has an all-around pleasant personality. We are still accessing his personality and will update after his upcoming appointment.
