Meet Pumpkin & Ginger – Bonded Shih Tzu Sisters Seeking Their Forever Home Pumpkin (black, 9 years old) and Ginger (pewter, 8 years old) are tiny but mighty senior Shih Tzu's, each weighing around 10 lbs. These inseparable sisters are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. We welcomed Pumpkin and Ginger a few months ago after their previous owners made the difficult decision to surrender them. Both girls have chronic skin and ear issues, which are common in Shih Tzu's. Thanks to the great care from our vet and foster family, they’re doing much better—but they’ll need ongoing support to stay comfortable and healthy. Their care routine includes: • Weekly medicated baths (can be done at home). Sometimes 2x a week if there is a flare-up • Regular use of topical medicated sprays/wipes • Occasional ear cleanings • Consistent grooming and haircuts • Special diet/supplements Ginger is fairly cooperative with her care, while Pumpkin has a bit more sass—but both are sweet and affectionate. They both had recent dental work, are spayed, up to date on vaccines and preventatives, and microchipped. They’re great eaters but require a special, chicken-free diet to help manage their skin from the inside out. Their meals include variations of fish-based kibble, peas, carrots, green beans, ground beef, Greek yogurt, omega oil, and probiotics—easy to prepare and not prescription-based. These ladies love (and sometimes demand) the royal treatment: lap time, naps, gentle brushing, sunbathing, short strolls, and lounging on soft beds. They’re mostly housebroken, crate-trained, travel well in the car, show no interest in the resident kitty, get along with other calm dogs, sleep well, and can be trusted alone at home. They will do best in a patient, quiet home with limited stairs, a small fenced yard (both prefer to potty off the leash), and a regular routine. Because of their size and special needs, small children and energetic dogs may not be the best fit in their new home. The cutest thing about them is that they both have an underbite and stick their tongues out. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to two loving, low-key companions who thrive on affection and routine, Pumpkin and Ginger would love to meet you. Story
Abby is available for adoption! When Abby arrived she had a terrible skin infection, was underweight and her hair was so matted we had to shave her down. Some of these pictures still show some of her inflamed skin and matted feet. Her foster parents took great care of her and she now looks and feels so much better. She is finally ready to find her new home. We are hoping we can find a wonderful adopter who doesn't really care about a dog's age. We are completely stumped regarding how old she is. She was surrendered to a shelter and the owner indicated that she was 11 years old. Then when the foster family got to know her they thought she must be very young, like 1-2 years old based on her puppy like behavior and energy level. So we asked our vet to give us an estimate and based on their exam they guessed about 5 years old. So all we can tell you is Abby is anywhere from 1-11 years old. My guess would be she is probably closer to the 10-11 years but is just a very playful, puppy like dog, but that is only a guess. Abby is a happy, active little dog. She loves going for walks and chasing after toys, but she is just as happy to snuggle on your lap. She does tend to jump on people and can be a little mouthy, but it's not normally aggressive... She's just a little excited. There have been a couple of incidents with Abby when the foster mom tried to move her off her lap and Abby turned around and snapped at her. She did not break the skin but she was trying to bite. We don't know if she has something that is sore that the foster mom may have been hurting when she grabbed her or if Abby just didn't want to be moved. This has happened a couple of times so an adopter does need to be aware of this. Abby walks well on the leash, but can be reactive around other dogs (especially bigger dogs), which means barking and a growly tone, but once she calms down, she's fine. It seems to be fear based, most likely due to lack of socialization, but with continual exposure and slow introductions, she should get a lot better. Therefore, she needs someone who will continue to work with her in this area of behavior. The best home for Abby would probably be one with no young children (older kids would be fine). She is currently being fostered in a home with other dogs and cats, and she seems to be adjusting well. We don't know if Abby's skin condition was only due to the poor environment she was in and how bad her hair was matted, or if she is going to have allergies. Shih-Tzu's do tend to have skin allergies so whoever adopt her needs to keep in mind she may need allergy meds. For an application go to www.homesfurhounds.org She is located in Williamsburg, Va.
