Story
Meet Smokey 🐾 3 years old • ~50 lbs • Husky/Pit mix Smokey is the definition of a comeback story. When we first met him at the Amarillo shelter, he was curled up in his kennel, shut down and defeated. It was clear the shelter environment was weighing heavily on him. But since getting out, Smokey has been slowly rediscovering who he is—and it’s been incredible to watch. Now? That personality is starting to shine. Smokey is a gorgeous dark gray boy with striking blue eyes that will stop you in your tracks. He’s a medium-energy dog who enjoys playtime, attention, and being near his people. He loves to engage, will happily chase toys, and has a fun, slightly goofy side once he gets comfortable. He’s also a cuddler at heart and seeks out affection from his humans—he just needed the chance to feel safe first. Smokey is dog selective, and we want to be upfront about that so we can set him up for success. He has done well with some dogs (he currently coexists well with one and shares toys), but has had conflicts with others and can be pushy or overstimulated. 👉 Because of this, he may do best as an only dog or with a well-matched companion after proper introductions. He’s doing well on leash, though he can get excited and a little bouncy at times, and he’s still learning some manners (like keeping those teeth to himself during play). The biggest thing to know about Smokey? He’s a sensitive dog who just needed out of the chaos to start thriving. And now that he’s had that chance, he’s showing us how much love he has to give. He doesn’t need a perfect home—he just needs the right one. If you’re willing to give him a little patience and structure, Smokey will give you loyalty, personality, and those unforgettable blue eyes looking up at you every day. 💙
