Not good with cats,
Story
Sweet Mack is an English Bulldog mix who is 2 ½ years old and weighs in at 48 lbs. He’s been in ABTR’s care for six months and is fostered in Huntsville, Alabama. With a medium energy level, he’s the perfect mix of playful and cuddly. He enjoys toys and going on walks but also likes to snuggle on the couch or nap in front of the fireplace. While Mack wants to be good with other dogs, he is not great at reading the signals other dogs send him. He really cares more about people than other dogs. He doesn’t really know how to play with other dogs. He will sniff them and does not try to take things away, but mostly he just wants them to move out of the way so he can get to the human. We don’t know how he does with cats, but he is okay with kids in a very controlled environment on leash. He is not the right fit for a family with young children, though. His size and energy level can overwhelm kids and result in them getting hurt.
Mack is housebroken and uses a crate when he eats and when his foster mom is away from home, but he’s not really a fan. He was required to be crate-rested during his heartworm treatment so he’s understandably a bit over it now. Walks are a favorite of Mack’s, and he’s best on a front-clip, no-pull harness (on a regular leash he pulls, and he’s got that bully strength). With a harness, he is fairly easy to handle and loves going out to explore. He also loves going by car, getting very excited and is a particularly good rider. Commands are in process, and so far he’s learned sit, wait, leave it, drop it and come. He’s also neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.
Mack completed heartworm treatment in March 2025. He was heart worm positive when he entered ABTR’s care after being found as a stray in November 2024 and is otherwise a healthy boy. (He may be prone to the typical Bulldog issues though, like skin and ear infections.) Since completing his treatment, he’s been able to do more exploration of the yard and loves meeting new people. He knows that in order to receive pets & scratches he must sit, but Mack has his own unique style. He prefers to sit with his back to you, most likely on your feet and with his neck extended, looking up and back at you to get his neck scratched. He does the same thing when sitting on the couch.
The perfect forever home for Mack would be one with adults only, preferably someone who has Bulldog experience, and possibly no other dogs (or laid back, submissive dogs only). He would be happiest in a home with someone who understands the Bulldog personality and will let him be a Velcro dog. The boy loves to chew and is most comfortable in two situations: with a chew like an antler or Benebone in his mouth and right beside his human.
