Story
Hi, I’m Scooter! And here’s my story:I’m a 7-year-old Havanese mix, weighing about 25 pounds with a clean bill of health. I was adopted through Rescue Gang five years ago but sadly I’ve lost my owner to sudden illness and I’m still adjusting to this drastic change. I would do best in a quiet home, and preferably as the only dog where I can have all the attention to myself the way I’m used to. Bonus if you’re retired or work from home, I’m not the kind of pooch that likes to be left alone for too long.My adoption profile gets a lot of attention (because let’s face it, I’m adorable) but underneath my good looks, I’m an anxious guy that gets quite overwhelmed in new environments and around new people. Since it can take me several weeks to fully warm up in a new home, I need someone who is patient and experienced with skittish dogs like me. Someone willing to give me the time and space I need to settle in completely and feel safe.If I start to feel unsafe, I might act out by fear-nipping when someone I don’t know very well reaches for my face or grabs my paws to wipe off snow. But I don’t mean any harm really, I’m just ultra-sensitive and a little confused right now. Luckily my foster mom knows a fun towel trick! She shimmies a big fluffy towel around me like we’re playing a game and before I know it my face is clear of eye boogers and my paws are nice and dry. The anxiety meds from the Vet seem to be helping, and so do the few drops of Rescue Remedy that get added to my water every day. Affection and playtime are on my terms, especially in the beginning. But once you’ve earned my trust (and you’ll work hard for it), I’m a real sweetheart that will follow you around until it’s time to snuggle up for the night. I love to nap and lounge the day away and although I don’t require a whole lot of exercise, I do enjoy a jaunty walk around the neighborhood once or twice a day. I do great on a leash, but I can be vocal when I see other dogs - a firm correction does the trick and then I’m back to enjoying my walk.I’m a smart boy who’s treat motivated and I would benefit greatly from learning a few more commands or tricks to increase my confidence. Like most anxious dogs, I need a pack leader that is loving but firm, so I don’t regress in my behavior. I was recently trained to wait in my “spot” until the humans are done eating their meals, then I’m rewarded with a yummy treat. They were impressed with how quickly I caught on.I sleep soundly through the night (preferably next to you), and I’ll go potty outside as I’m supposed to. With an established routine, accidents are no issue. I get along fine with friendly dogs, though I don’t care to engage much; I prefer to be near my humans. Cats are unknown but I’d probably just ignore them, too. Since smaller children make me nervous, older dog savvy kids only please. If you think you’ll be my perfect match, apply to meet me today!DATCP #483538
