Story
Meet Mattie This beauty, Mattie, was surrendered when her daddy became ill. Care workers sought us out to get Mattie into a safe place so she could get her second chance. Mattie’s dad loved her and took great care of her. Originally Mattie was dumped on her daddy’s land. He found her when she was just a young pup. He took her in and loved her those many years. Mattie is thought to be a seven-year-old English setter/springer mix. She is stunning with a longish, fluffy black and white coat, long legs and a happy smile. She weighs just 47 lbs. She is still shy, but every day she gets braver. She tries so hard. She is friendly, sweet, gentle and calm. She LOVES people and is blossoming under all the attention she is receiving. Mattie is housetrained. She enjoys her yard time. She will need a fenced containment yard to run in and feel safe. She will look to get away from anything that scares her. Mattie loves to play with her people. Mattie loves the fresh air and sunshine and the freedom outside of her kennel. She walks well on a leash. She loves to be petted. Mattie lived in a quiet and sheltered environment before coming to us. Mattie was recently adopted and after a month she was returned. Her adopters became impatient when Mattie would bark at loud noises or new experiences or things she didn’t understand, like people on bikes or baby strollers. For a dog who lived in the country with her dad, Mattie had never seen these things before. Barking is a natural reaction. Mattie also seems scared of other dogs. She has mixed reactions, some dogs she ignores and some she will actively bark at as a defensive reaction to get them away from her. She easily coexists with the other dogs that are in the play yards next to her. But at this time, we think Mattie must be the only dog in the home. Mattie did well with cats and we’ll cat test her again for interested adopters. Mattie will thrive with patience and kindness to help her through new experiences. Understanding where Mattie came from and the secluded life she led until now will help tremendously to give Mattie the support she needs to move forward. She learns quickly. She absorbs kindness and wants to build trust. Mattie is terribly sad having been returned. She loves a quiet environment. She has no idea what she did to end up in the shelter again. She is a true gem and will make for a wonderful and loyal companion for the person or family willing to give her the time to decompress. If you like this breed or are simply looking for a terrific dog to be your companion and are willing to meet Mattie where she is right now, Mattie may be the one for you. She’s very loyal, loving and easy to be with. We love Mattie and know whoever meets her will too. If interested in welcoming Mattie to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please use the downloadable application found on our homepage. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.
