Story
Socialization: Chloe gets along very well with other dogs. She is respectful of their space and enjoys hunting with them in the backyard. She has not been interested in playing with them but she happily coexists with other dogs. She loves her people and likes to be near and enjoys cuddling on the couch, but she is hesitant with new people. She is interested and wants affection from new people but is hesitant to approach. She overcomes her hesitation quickly with some encouragement and I imagine this will get better over time as she learns people are nice. She gets spooked by loud and sudden sounds both in the home and outside, so she will need a calmer home without lots of comings and goings. She prefers to have a person to cuddle with during thunderstorms! She is timid in new places and gets spooked easily, so a fully fenced backyard is best for her, where she can get fully comfortable and has the room to burn off her young energy daily (as she has quite a bit of it!). Busy/loud urban living and a home with children are not a good fit for her. She is not cat friendly and will go after a cat.
Training: Chloe is house trained and very well behaved in the house. She is very easy to have around! Currently, she is crated when I leave and also overnight. After some initial barking for a few minutes (only when I leave the house), she settles down quickly and does well in the crate. She has not been destructive, so I think she could free roam in the house after some time. She is eager to please, food motivated, and very responsive to correction. For a setter, she listens reasonably well when I call her (unless she is focused on a bird/squirrel) and comes running. When she would like affection, she will come up to you and automatically sit down and lean right into you. If you don't notice her, she is happy to let you know with a gentle nudge with her nose!
Activity requirements: The weather has been nice, so I have left my back door open for the dogs to come and go as they please, and Chloe chooses to spend several hours outside guarding the backyard from squirrels. She periodically runs back inside for a drink and to check I'm still here or to take a quick nap, then runs outside again. She has quite a bit of energy to burn off daily and does get restless in the house on a bad weather day when she can't be outside as much as she would need to burn off her energy. She has started to play with some toys on bad weather days, but she will need to be well exercised daily. She needs to be able to run in a safely fenced area daily. If her adopter plans to walk her, it needs to be with patience, and the adopter must have the physical capability to handle her if she gets spooked, as she will try to bolt in panic.
Fence requirements: An interesting and decent sized backyard, fenced with a physical fence is a non-negotiable requirement for adopting Chloe. She needs to be able to run daily to burn off her energy, and needs a place where she feels fully comfortable to be able to explore and run. Leash walks are not sufficient exercise for her and dog parks are likely not a good fit. Due to her hesitancy and timidness, an invisible fence is not an option for her.
Personality: Chloe is a very kind, gentle and happy dog. She is very affectionate and loving with her people. She is a very sweet girl and enjoys her cuddle time. It's unfortunate that she's had negative experiences with people in her past, because it's easy to tell that her nature is to be happy and friendly! She often gets excited and when she's happy, she's got that wagging tail! She is curious and eager to please, she is all about her people (and the squirrels, of course) and she prefers to be where her person is but she wants to be close and loves to cuddle without being overly needy or clingy. She is a really nice balance between being sweet and affectionate and being independent and keeping herself occupied when need be. She has been very easy to have around and has been a dream foster!
Health history: Chloe is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and is on monthly heartworm prevention. She was treated for heartworms prior to her arrival in the USA and is now a healthy girl with no health issues! Her next leishmaniasis test will be due in June 2026.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Chloe is a very sweet, loving, affectionate and happy girl! She has been very easy to have around and a dream to foster! She will need a forever home that has a fully fenced backyard that is interesting enough for her to be able to explore and entertain herself. She happily coexists with other dogs, but she is all about her people, so she would do fine as an only dog. Her ideal home will not leave her home alone for long hours, I would like her to go to a home where someone will be able to be with her most of the time. She would do best in a calmer home in a quiet suburb or more rural setting. A home with children or in a loud, city environment are not good fits for her.
