Story
Socialization/training: Ranger has had some basic obedience training as he understands sit down, stay, no, ect. Ranger has been known to be aggressive with certain dogs inside the house, but otherwise does well with other dogs. Ranger was tested with various types of dogs by a certified trainer, his issues with certain dogs are more situational. Ranger lived in an outdoor kennel, by himself, for over 10 years so he is still learning how to be a member of a family inside. Ranger likes things calm in the house. He is doing very well in his foster home with the other dogs in the home. He would prefer to be the only dog or share a home with another older dog that doesn’t get in his face. Crate trained: His past foster reported that he would settle down in the crate after 10 minutes or so. At his current foster home, he has made it clear he doesn’t want to be crated while his foster dad is away. He would constantly bark and keep moving around in the crate for hours and hours. Then he would be covered in drool and worn out. It was sad. He is/was fine with being crated if he knows his foster dad is home (ie overnight). After consulting with a trainer, Ranger stays in a large room by himself when his foster dad is gone. Most of the time Ranger will then lay down and rest until his foster dad comes home. He is watched randomly by a camera and if he is barking, a simple “Ranger sit down” and he will stop. Ranger’s life outside has made him more vocal than a lot of setters and that should be remembered in living circumstances where noise could be a problem. Leash trained:  Ranger is fine on the leash and loves to go for a walk. He is a very strong boy for his age and is very prey driven so he will pull and get distracted, but he is eager to please and learns fast. Activity Level: Ranger is very active for a dog of his age. He likes to run around the yard and even likes to play with certain dogs. He is always excited when his foster dad comes home and likes to run around and tell everyone how happy he is about it. Fence: Due to Ranger’s history of being kept in an outdoor kennel, he is a certified escape artist (with the bruises to prove it). A secure, physical privacy style fence of at least 6 feet will be required. He can climb chain link fences very easily. Behavior: Ranger is a sweet old man who would love nothing more than to lay in your recliner while you are home and nap. He is learning to enjoy being petted and loved on. He has been found to bond quickly and more favorably with men. He has no problem with women, but if there is a couple he will choose the male. He can be protective of his chosen people/person (resource guarding) when it comes to other dogs. His foster dad feeds him in his crate and has kept bone and toy time very supervised. Ranger likes things to be calm inside. He is still learning how to live inside with other dogs. He is doing really well but has more learning to do. Medical History: Ranger had lyme and was treated but he will test positive the rest of his life. Ranger has several old injuries from his escapes during his previous life. At some point it's believed he had a small stroke as he has one “lazy” eye. Ranger also has typical arthritis and old man pains and is on a daily pain reliever. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Ranger is a very deserving dog. He is a sweet and happy old man. He loves a comfy chair, yummy meals, and to run around outside a little bit. Ranger is going on 11 years old, but he still has so much life left and love to give. He needs just the right retirement home that will be patient with him and help him live out his life happy and loved just as he deserves. Foster Location: Chesterton, IN Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##1763593##

Story
Socialization/training: Mavroula is not treat motivated, at least not so far, making it more challenging to train her. She has learned her name, and most often comes when called. We are working on “come” and “sit”. A most endearing behavior is when she sees leashes come out, she sits perfectly still for you to put her leash and harness on her. We also practice “wait” when opening the gate to go on a walk. She has had no accidents since I have had her. She likes other dogs and most people. It took Mavroula some time to be friendly and relaxed with my dogs. She now lies sleeping near both my dogs and likes to be close to them. Crate trained: She is crate trained, but she doesn’t usually go into the crate. She also has a separate space in my house where she eats and goes when I leave the house. Leash trained: She walks well on a leash with or without other dogs. She doesn’t have a lot of practice walking on a leash, but she does not pull. She also runs well on a leash and is an almost perfect running companion. However, due to her inexperience she sometimes gets under your feet. Activity Level: Mavroula needs a few walks a day to be happy, but she does not need to run extensively as do many English Setters. Fence: A fenced yard is required for Marvoula. She needs at least a small backyard to run around in, and this yard needs to have a solid fence, at least 5 feet high. Behavior:  Mavroula came to me as a very anxious and fearful dog. She walked around with her tail tightly tucked between her rear legs. As she has become more confident and comfortable, her tail now comes out. She now walks around the house happily. Mavroula is a surprisingly easy dog. She is quiet, very gentle, and independent. She sometimes buries her sweet sensitive face shyly into me. We walk with other dogs and she likes being part of the group. She looks to people and other dogs she is familiar with for comfort and to gain confidence. Medical History: My vet says she is healthy. She is microchipped, spayed, fully vaccinated and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next leishmaniasis test will be due in December 2024.  Mavroula originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Marvoula gets nervous and afraid when there is too much chaos and noise. She is nervous around young children, so kids in the home should be at least 12 years old or older. I feel very strongly that she needs a quiet home with at least one other dog that she can continue to learn from. I have fallen in love with Mavroula and will be very sad to let her go. Foster Location: Tucson, AZ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Edith does not know any true commands, however she’s very quick to pick up on routines which is helpful with her being deaf. When meeting new people, including men and children, she is very sweet and does a tap dance. Edith will need to be the only pet in the home. She gets along with my senior lab most of the time but decides she doesn’t like her from time to time. I’ve never seen her around cats, but suspect her prey drive would kick in. She’s very trustworthy in the home, but will jump on furniture/windowsills with her front paws.    Crate trained: I’ve never had to put Edith in a crate. She can be trusted alone in the home for up to 9 hours. Leash trained: Edith enjoys short, 10 minute walks before she gets tired and lays down. While walking she likes to take her time and enjoy the smells. Activity Level: Edith has bursts of energy that last for a few minutes then she returns to sleeping. When outside, she’ll sniff around for a few minutes and ask to come back inside. She is fairly low energy and likes to find a quiet place to sleep.    Fence: I have a 6 foot fence, but a 4 foot fence would be fine. She is unable to jump fences and I haven’t seen her dig in the yard. If there is a hole big enough for her to escape, she will.    Behavior: Edith is a sweet, affectionate and loving little lady. She loves to be petted but isn’t much of a cuddler. She will lay for a few pets and will then find her own space. She’ll follow me around the house if she notices me moving. She likes to look out the window and will occasionally bark. She barks maybe once or twice a week. Medical History: Edith is completely deaf, but it doesn’t impact her day-to-day. She has arthritis in her hind hips and neck and because of the arthritis in her neck, she can’t hold her head up. She had a tumor removed from her right front paw in November 2023. The doctor was able to remove 95% of the tumor and expect it to grow back very slowly. It is not the type of cancer to spread. She takes medications easily with food with a monthly cost of approximately $75.      Foster Comments: Edith came to me in June 2023. Since she’s been with me, she’s really come out of her shell and it’s amazing what a little love has done for her personality. She is a sweet, mellow girl and will need a home with no other dogs. Foster Location: Liverpool, NY (Syracuse area) Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Details
Good with kids, Good with dogs, House-trained, Spayed or Neutered, Shots are up-to-date,
Story
Socialization/training: Chryssa is very sweet and loving. She loves all adults and children and is quick to lean into anyone willing to pet her. She plays well with dogs her size and smaller at the dog park. Chryssa rides well in the car as well as the golf cart where she is tethered in, of course. Chryssa is very food motivated, so training comes pretty easy for her.  She has been working on Sit, Stay and Off. She was a countertop surfer when she first arrived, but that has gotten better in our presence. Crate trained: Chryssa is great in her crate. At night she goes right into her crate where she sleeps through the night with the door open. If we leave during the day for a few hours she will go into her crate with a little help and lie down and await our return. Leash trained: Chryssa walks well with a harness with the typical prey drive when birds, rabbits or squirrels are in sight. Activity Level: Chryssa enjoys a walk or hike in the morning as well as one in the evening or running off leash in the dog park with her friends. She loves to play with her toys inside or in the yard, but requires super tough toys as she is quite a chewer. Fence: We have a 5' rod iron and block wall combo that she has never challenged. A fenced yard would be best for her so she can play and burn off energy during the day when not on walks or at the dog park. She is still quite young.  Behavior: Chryssa is affectionate, playful and a happy dog. She would love to sit in your lap or cuddle next to you on the couch. She is calm in the house and does not bark. She will check on you if you leave the room but then lays back down. She is a bit independent and a bit velcro, so a nice combo. Medical History: Chryssa is very healthy. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm and flea and tick prevention. Her next Leishmaniasis test is due November of 2024.      Chryssa originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Chryssa is a really wonderful dog. She is smart, sensitive and loving. She would be okay as an only dog but also would love the company of a fur sibling. Her ideal family would have a fenced yard for her to play in and also an active family to take her on lots of walks and hikes and incorporate her into their everyday lives and she loves to be with her humans. Foster Location: Florence, Arizona Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. English Setter Golden Retriever

Size
(when grown) Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
Details
Good with dogs, House-trained, Spayed or Neutered, Shots are up-to-date,
Story
Socialization/training: Tonka is very food motivated and remembers his commands once he knows you have a treat. He knows sit, down, and leave it. He has poor recall and can be stubborn with name recognition. Additional work is recommended. He does not seem to be fearful of noises or new situations. He does well living in a home with 3 other dogs. He wants to be around his humans and will follow them from room to room. There is no separation anxiety, but usually someone is home and he has 3 other dogs home when we leave him. He has never been around cats but has seen them on walks and I don't think he should be trusted around them. He is frightened of thunder and fireworks but not exceedingly. Crate trained: Tonka has no interest in going into a crate and really doesn't need one. Leash trained: Tonka is very strong and can be a big puller when he sees another dog. He LOVES his walks. He walks well with one or two of the other dogs but does better by himself. He does have a tendency to stop in front of you to look at something. Activity Level: He has one longer walk in the morning and a short walk before bed. He would do well in a home with other dogs who love to play. Inside he's a perfect gentleman. Fence: A 6' fence is REQUIRED. Like many setter/mixes, he can be an escape artist. A solid exercise plan is crucial. Tonka would love to be your running/hiking buddy. I think he would blow through an electronic fence. Behavior: Tonka is a very smart dog who is very food motivated. He doesn't beg, if he gets a treat and is told no more, he stops. He will bark when the others bark but is the first to stop. He loves to be around his humans. He follows me everywhere and will sleep at my feet.    Medical History:Tonka is a very healthy young dog. He's neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention and nextguard.   Foster Comments:  Tonka is a great easy-going dog in the house. He needs an experienced dog person. He loves his walks and does great in the car. His ideal home would be a family that does not crate him. A high fence is mandatory in his forever home. I don't think he would intentionally hurt a small child, but he could do it unintentionally.  A willingness to leash walk at least twice a day for potty breaks and continue with leash manners is crucial. He has a very strong prey drive, so he will not be safe off-leash. Because of this prey drive, he is not good with small dogs, cats, or other furry critters.   Foster Location: Port St Lucie, FL Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Jovie is a super sweet dog who adores human attention, especially cuddles. She has been great with everyone she meets. She has had limited interaction with children but has been friendly with the few she has met while at the park. Jovie is housebroken, knows “sit”, “down”, “come”, “stay” and is working on “paw”. She is smart and seems to enjoy training, especially nosework. However, all knowledge of any commands go out the door the minute we are on a walk. Then, her hunting instincts take over and she is completely focused on searching for squirrels and rabbits. Jovie is not currently fostered with other dogs, but spent two weeks in a temporary foster with other dogs, and reportedly did well other than some resource guarding. While with me, Jovie has shown little interest in other dogs and prefers to ignore them. She will calmly walk side-by-side or hang out in the same room with other dogs, but is not really interested in playing. She will correct energetic dogs who get in her face. Once they give her space, she is happy to coexist and may eventually show interest in play. Jovie has shown resource guarding towards other dogs who approach her food, bed, toys or me, but has never guarded from humans. Jovie lives with a senior cat in her current foster home. She gets along great with the cat, other than a couple of instances of growling when the cat approached her food or treats. This behavior has virtually stopped with time spent near each other understanding the cat will not take her food. Otherwise, she respects and ignores the cat and they are very sweet together.  Crate trained: Jovie is crate trained on command of “kennel up” and goes in with little problem. She has not once made a noise overnight. She now sleeps with the crate door open and has free roam of the house, as she is completely trustworthy. However, she often chooses to sleep in her crate. She has been left in the crate overnight and during the day with no problem.  Leash trained: Jovie LOVES her walks and runs. She typically pulls on the leash as she is excited to explore and hunt. She is interested in squirrels and will point out each one. She will only lunge if they run right in front of her. I have not made a large effort for loose-leash training, but I think if you find the right treat/reward, it may be possible.  Activity Level: Jovie has the perfect energy level. She is calm in the house, happy to just watch squirrels out the window, but will also hike, run and walk daily. We run approximately 3-4 miles a few days per week and walk the other days. If she’s had her exercise, she’s happy to curl up indoors or just follow you from room to room. She enjoys short bursts of play (fetch or tug) in the house or yard. These play sessions typically only last a few minutes and then she’s ready to cuddle again.  Fence: Jovie did not have a fenced yard for the first 6 weeks she was with me. She seemed to receive enough exercise with the daily runs/walks. Now that we do have a fenced yard (4ft physical fence), she absolutely loves it and will run around throwing the toy for herself or playing fetch with me for a few minutes. She loves sitting on the deck watching squirrels and the neighbor dogs. She has not tried to climb the fence but has chased a squirrel under a hole in the fence. I do not know how she would do with an invisible fence. She would prefer a yard with space to run and explore.  Behavior: Every person who meets Jovie has said what a sweetheart she is. The only time she barks is when we are playing tug or fetch and she gets excited. She is a major cuddler and tries to get chin scratches from everyone she meets. She has never once been destructive, countersurfed, or done anything she is not supposed to. She is left alone for several hours per day while I am at work and has not shown any signs of separation anxiety. She loves crinkly toys the most and it is very cute when she gets the zoomies and tosses them around the house or yard. She loves being with people and will follow me around the house, but is also happy sitting on the deck gazing out at the world while I work inside. Jovie did need 3-4 weeks to feel comfortable with touch. Initially, she would growl if you touched her paws or hindquarters. She is now much more comfortable and will roll over for full-body massages. She can also be sensitive when being brushed or having her ears cleaned. Adopters should be patient with touch and grooming as she learns to trust in a new environment, but I expect she will quickly warm up to her new family.  Medical History:  Jovie is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. She is on monthly heartworm prevention. She tested positive for Lyme disease and completed 30 days of antibiotic treatment. She has no problem taking oral medication with a little bit of peanut butter. She has not reacted well to shots or blood draws at the vet. She has needed to be muzzled and treated with trazodone prior to vet visits. The vet has suggested sedation for any other needle-procedures in the future. Due to her touch sensitivity in stressful situations, I do not feel she would be the best choice for a family with very young children.  Foster Comments: Jovie is an excellent dog and such a sweetheart. She is very easy to care for and it was a difficult decision not to keep her. She was picked up as a stray in rural Kansas, but I feel she must have lived in a home previously. She is so well-behaved and calm in the house - she’s a dream! She is a great adventure buddy for anyone who likes running or hiking, but would also be fine with daily walks and running around the yard. I think she’d also enjoy scentwork training. Due to her resource guarding, it is best for Jovie to either be the solo dog or to go to a home willing to work on this behavior. Any dog she may be living with should be calm and respectful to other dogs. I would not recommend a home with very young children who may not understand or respect her boundaries.   Foster Location: Ypsilanti, MI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
