Story
Socialization/training:  Grady is friendly with visitors to the home and our veterinary staff loves him for his calm, cooperative behavior. Dogs: Grady has excellent dog manners with both large and small dogs.  He ignores neighboring dogs that fiercely bark along the common fence.  He plays gently with a much smaller 15-pound dog in our home. I have observed him allowing another dog to eat out of his bowl. He is playful and would really love another dog to romp with, providing him with mental and physical activity. Cats: We have not observed him with cats but could get him cat tested if needed. Children: We have observed Grady being friendly with small children, but we have also observed him being uncomfortable with an active 9-year-old in the home. A calmer household or older children who understand dog boundaries would be best.  We believe Grady spent much of his life in a kennel, so he didn’t initially learn basic household skills – but he’s making wonderful progress. He knows “sit” and “stay”, especially before meals. He is housetrained.  His kitchen and table manners are much improved. While more training would be helpful and he does have a strong will, we know he’s a smart boy that is eager to please. Patience, consistency and positive training will be important. Grady accepts baths and nail trims without complaint, and enjoys being brushed. Crate training: Grady is comfortable in a crate. We keep a crate available for him and he comes and goes at will. Leash training: Leash training is still a work in progress. He can be a strong puller. Activity Level: Grady is a large, athletic boy with a lot of energy. He currently has 2 daily exercise periods where he runs off- leash in a large fenced area and absolutely lights up when it’s time to run.  Interestingly, after his morning exercise he prefers lounging outside on a couch during the day – regardless of the weather.  This would be beneficial for a family that works during the day.  Of course, if anyone initiates an activity, he’s up and ready to participate. Fence: We feel a physical 4-5 ft. fence would be important for Grady. He doesn’t dig or climb fences but if he finds an opportunity, he will go exploring Behavior: Grady is a big, sweet, high energy, loveable goofball that makes us laugh every day.  He has different facets to his personality: (1) Sometimes he will sit in front of you, look at you with big, soulful eyes, and encourage you to pet him for as long as you will.  He’s famous for rolling onto his back with all 4 feet in the air flashing a silly grin while waiting for a belly rub. He loves to roll in leaves, snow, grass, and wallow in ponds.  He is meticulous about cleaning himself after outdoor activities and enjoys being brushed.  (2) The flip side of Grady is that he can go from 0 to 100 when out in the woods running with that long, loping gait.  He was taken to a shelter because allegedly he wouldn’t hunt, but he certainly has searching instincts because he’s always moving. Exercise will be important. Playful dog friends could help him with that energy. He loves to chase balls, but hasn’t caught on to the bringing it back part yet! (3) There is a mischievous side to Grady manifested by carrying shoes and other objects around the house.  He hasn’t damaged anything yet but we are vigilant! He will occasionally get on a bed or couch but generally prefers a comfy dog bed. Medical History: Grady has no current medical issues.  He is up to date on vaccinations and receives flea/tick/heartworm prevention.  He is neutered. Grady came into foster care overweight at 68 pounds.  He has slimmed down to a healthy 57 pounds. Foster Comments: Grady is a sweet, very handsome boy. After spending too much time in a kennel, he is ready to be someone’s cherished companion. Our dream for him is that he will join an active, loving family that will appreciate and encourage his sweet nature, embrace his playful energy, and continue helping him grow into his very best self. Never again must he wait in a kennel for the attention he deserves. He will be a treasure for the right, lucky family. Grady is a big, handsome, high-energy sweetheart with a personality as big as his paws.  At 57 pounds, he’s athletic, playful, affectionate – and just the right amount of goofy to keep you laughing. We are looking for a family that will appreciate his multifaceted personality, provide good daily exercise, continue basic manners training, and if possible, provide opportunities for regular play with other dogs. A physical fence would be best.  Foster Location: Waynesboro, VA Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##2528564##

Story
Socialization: Charlie hasn’t met a person he doesn’t like—he’s friendly with people of all genders and ages. He gets along well with other dogs but can become a bit overwhelmed in highenergy environments such as dog parks or around boisterous children. While his foster home doesn’t have cats, we’ve been told he is catneutral. Training: Charlie knows how to sit and doesn’t try to counter-surf or chew on household items. He is fully potty trained and will whine to let you know when he needs to go outside. He will need continued work on accepting touch from his waist to his hind end, though his sensitivity is gradually improving with consistent touch, clicker, and reward-based training. He does bark at wildlife he sees in the yard from inside the house and may become a bit restless, wanting to go outside to chase, until he’s redirected or distracted. Crate trained: He is crated at night in his foster home and during his meals so he can stay separated from the resident dogs. He goes into his crate willingly and seems to enjoy settling in for the night. He sleeps through the night without barking or whining, but in the morning he’ll let out a few whines once he hears everyone up and moving—ready to join the fun. Leash trained: He walks great on a leash on sidewalks without any pulling. On nature trails, he may pull more strongly when he catches interesting animal scents. He will bark at some dogs he encounters on walks, while he’s able to pass others without any reaction at all. Activity level/requirements: He has a medium activity level and would ideally have a yard to run in or an adopter committed to regular leash walks. At his foster home, he gets 2–3 walks per day, each ranging from 1 to 3 miles. He seems perfectly content with this routine and spends the time between walks sleeping or relaxing near his foster mom and dad. Fence requirements: Charlie would do well in a home with a physical fence, an invisible fence, or with adopters who are committed to taking him on several walks each day. His foster home doesn’t have a physical fence, and he’s been perfectly content with a few longer leash walks daily. Although he has a moderate prey drive, he’s smart and we believe he could learn to use an invisible fence with proper training. He hasn’t shown any escape attempts in his foster home, though we were told this might have been a concern previously—likely related to anxiety in loud or highly energetic environments. Using an AirTag or GPS device could be helpful during his adjustment period. Personality: Like many dogs in foster care, Charlie needs a patient and gentle home where he can continue rebuilding his trust in people. Because he has some touch sensitivity, unexpected contact in certain areas can make him uncomfortable, though he has made steady progress in recent weeks with desensitization training. When he starts to feel uneasy, he lets out a soft rumble and will often take himself to another room for a brief break until he’s ready to return.Despite this, Charlie absolutely loves affection! He loves head cuddles and pets, and he’ll happily offer a paw when he wants more attention. He would thrive in a calm, predictable household and may benefit from an anti-anxiety medication during times when loud or sudden noises are expected—such as construction, energetic children, or neighborhood fireworks. Health history: UTD on vaccinations, is spayed/neutered, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm preventative. He has been prescribed Trazodone for situational anxiety. Foster comments: Charlie is a sweet and affectionate pup, and our dream for him is that he finds a family—either with older children or an adultonly home—who has the time and patience to understand his communication style and help him feel safe as he continues building trust with people. Foster Location: Milford, MI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Willy gets along well other dogs. Willy does not chase the cats. He hasn’t met a human he does not want to lick. We have not had Willy around small children. We are working on basic commands. Crate trained: Willy is crate trained we call it his “house”. He was sleeping in the crate at night. For about the last month he has been sleeping with my son and made himself extremely comfortable. Leash trained: Willy does well on a leash. He could use more leash time but it has been really cold outside. Activity Level: Willy is a very typical setter! He would spend the whole day chasing anything that moves. He loves to be outside. We were told he lived on farm before he came into rescue. Fence: Willy would do best with fenced yard. He has jumped over the 30-inch gate on the front porch from a standing position and cleared the four steps because he saw something he wanted to chase. He returned home before I could get the leash and treats and run after him.       Behavior: Willy loves being with his people. It did not take him long to become comfortable with the routine in our house. Willy is a love bug. Willy tolerates a bath, brushing, and ear cleaning. He is very interested in food but is not food aggressive. Medical History: Previously, Willy had Lyme’s disease but this was treated. He receives a monthly allergy shot (cytopoint). He is otherwise healthy. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention.   Foster Comments: Willy is used to using a doggie door. He can be left alone but prefers to know you are in the house. He will be good with other dogs and would also be fine with cats.  Foster Location: Baltimore, MD Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization: Patchee loves everyone she meets and readily approaches people for petting. She has met men, women, and children as young as 8 years old. Likewise, she has not yet met a dog (male or female) that she did not like. Cats are unknown but can be tested if needed. Training: Patchee is deaf, so training for her is a little bit different. She responds readily to most hand signals. She is well-behaved and comfortable in the house and loves cuddling on the couch with her human. Crate trained: Patchee understands that this is her safe place and does not resist going into her crate. She is crated during the night in my bedroom and sleeps through the night. While I am away, she is also crated. Leash trained: Patchee walks very nicely on a leash with a harness. Initially, she may need a correction but quickly understands that she is supposed to walk beside you. When we encounter wildlife distractions, or other dogs, one quick correction gets her attention back to you. Activity level/requirements: Patchee loves to run loose in the backyard chasing birds. She also enjoys her walks. We walk about a half mile at least once a day, though she would prefer two walks. With proper exercise, she settles down nicely for a nap or cuddles. Fence requirements: A barrier fence would be a requirement for Patchee. I have 6’ fencing, partially constructed of cinder block and metal vertical slats. She enjoys looking through the fence. It is unknown if she would challenge a shorter fence. Due to her deafness, a dog park is not recommended for her. Personality: Patchee is a sweet, silly Setter. She is bright, curious, sassy and gentle. She loves cuddles and petting. It is clear that Patchee is not accustomed to brushing but she tolerates it. She also passively allows me to Dremel her nails. She just learning what toys are and frequently play-bows and barks at them. She just wants to be with her human and follows me wherever I go. Health history: UTD on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped and on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She had a dental and a couple of small masses removed in January, she lost some teeth and the masses were benign. Currently, she does have a sensitive stomach and is on prescription food. Foster comments: Patchee has been just as good as gold. She is a happy, funny, confident girl and is looking for a home where she will be understood and can continue to blossom. Foster Location: Sahuarita, AZ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
