Meet Smokey, the mixed breed. He is muscular, long legged and has the most impressive ears! Smokey arrived to the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him. He has lived with teens, men and women previously. Smokey is generally a little cautious in new situations – sometimes barking at new things that appear a bit spooky. With time and patience, he warms up and is a big mush ball. Smokey would thrive with a patient adopter that will let him acclimate in new scenarios and set him up for success. He has lived with a smaller sized male dog who he enjoyed playing with. At the Shelter, we observed that he is a bit more comfortable with small breed dogs and uneasy around larger breed dogs. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Smokey does have a history of being crate trained in the previous home. Adopters are encouraged to set up a crate in his new home as it may provide a safe space for Smokey to go to when he is unsure about his environment. If you are looking for a sensitive cutie who will be your BFF - consider meeting Smokey today!The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
