Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption Fee: $850 Shaggy is a 6 year old Old English Sheepdog who was surrendered to DPS. He was extremely malnourished when he came to his foster home but after a lot of love (and a lot of treats) he is happy, healthy, and ready to find his forever after! Shaggy weighs 72 pounds. He has a nonshedding coat which makes him an option for those with allergies, or who want less hair around the house. He will require regular grooming. Below is a note from Shaggy’s foster. “Shaggy, the gentle giant, brings a calming and secure vibe to our home. We playfully claim he adds a touch of sophistication with his handsome and well-mannered demeanor. When you meet him, he'll sit by your side or nuzzle for a pet, his tail and backside in a perpetual happy wag. Always sporting a friendly smile and kind eyes, Shaggy is open to climbing onto your lap or snuggling beside you. Since day one, he's been our loyal sidekick, following us from room to room with a watchful eye. Despite his size, Shaggy is gentle, especially with our 6-year-old, never pushing or nudging him. Whether greeting humans or fellow canines, Shaggy does so calmly, offering a sniff and wag before gracefully stepping back unless invited for more interaction. During the week, Shaggy starts his day at 7:15 AM when the kids wake up. After a trip outside for a bathroom break, he returns to the couch for some snuggles. At 8 AM he gets his breakfast before he embarks on his morning walk, which ranges from 1-3 miles depending on the day. Post-walk, he unwinds around the house, ensuring he always has me in his line of sight. Around 2:30 PM, he gets another bathroom break before I leave to pick up the kids from school. Shaggy has dinner at 6 PM, followed by a quick nighttime potty walk. He joins the kids' bedtime routines, winding down with the parents before retiring for the night at 9:30-10 p.m., with a brief bathroom break before settling on the 11-year-old's bed. Weekends bring a more relaxed routine, with Shaggy enjoying a leisurely sleep-in until 9 a.m. Adventures abound, from hiking and neighborly playdates to visits to the park—anywhere he's allowed to explore. Shaggy plays the role of our neighborhood ambassador, captivating walkers with irresistible smiles that prompt them to stop and give him a friendly pat. He enjoys saying hello to the neighbor's dog, accompanying them on walks, though he's not one to engage in playful antics. Shaggy prefers staying close to his human rather than frolicking around. Despite encountering a few aggressive neighborhood dogs, he maintains his cool, simply ignoring them and continuing on his way. Shaggy is a working dog that loves to lounge. He likes to sleep in on weekends and loves to go on long walks or for a jog. He love to go for car rides, and meet people and other dogs. He does not have puppy energy. He will pace and ask frequently for a walk if not given a good walk in the morning. He very much enjoys an evening walk, but it can be short. Initially, Shaggy pulled constantly on the leash and would pull us towards whatever he wanted. With treats and consistency, he politely walks on a loose leash for us. When he wants something like another dog he will pull but is now easily redirected. He would love to chase a squirrel but I haven’t let him while walking. He does not bark at other dogs but may whimper quietly, wanting to sniff them before returning to his walk. If it’s a dog we know he gets to say hi, but most we just keep walking by. Shaggy prefers to poo only during a walk. He will not poo in my yard and will hold it until his walk. Shaggy is perfectly house-trained from the second he entered my home. I feel 110% comfortable leaving him out and taking him to other venues, knowing he will only use the bathroom when allowed. We don’t have a doggie door. When taken to the back yard, he pees on command in the designated area. He will only poo during his walks. He does not use a crate. Shaggy is a devoted companion who thrives on the company of his humans and daily walks. His new family should be understanding and patient as he learns to walk on a loose leash, given his 75-pound frame. While he may need guidance, my kids have successfully walked him, and he now respects their lead. Shaggy is a cuddle enthusiast, making him an ideal addition for those who appreciate a furry friend always by their side. He eagerly embraces the company of other dogs and could seamlessly fit into a multi-dog household or enjoy outings to a dog park. Shaggy adores kids and flourishes in a bustling home with frequent visitors. Alternatively, he would be an excellent match for someone who enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and camping. However, Shaggy would also be content as the sole focus, relishing in the attention and exercise from a dedicated owner. Shaggy embodies all the delightful qualities we cherish in dogs – he's calm, affectionate, gentle, attentive, loyal, housetrained, and effortlessly easygoing. His reliability extends to being trustworthy within the household, with other canine companions, and especially with the smallest members of the family. Shaggy is the epitome of a lovable and well-rounded canine companion, bringing joy and reassurance to all aspects of family life.” Shaggy is an option for any home regardless of prior dog experience. Kids in the home should be over the age of 5.December 2, 2023, 1:48 am
