Rescue FAQs

Operation Underdog at a Glance… Operation Underdog was formed to assist the Humane Society of Raleigh County in Beckley, WV with rescue efforts. This includes promoting animals to the general public and rescue organizations, the transporting of dogs and cats out of the shelter to foster based rescue groups, the recruitment of local foster homes for dogs awaiting transport, and fundraising assistance such as Pennies for Paws, Howl-o-ween, Santa Paws, etc. Due to recent success in the shelter’s rescue and adoption rates (thanks to a committed staff and volunteers), Operation Underdog had the opportunity to expand services to include a monthly trip to a low cost spay and neuter clinic. This trip is offered at no charge to the community other than the cost of the procedure. Last year, a total of 213 animals were transported to the clinic to help decrease the number of unwanted litters. Operation Underdog also has animals available for adoption. Many of these animals were pulled from local kill shelters when their time was up, rescued from lives of neglect as strays, or were taken into our care to prevent them from entering local shelters. Our adoption process includes an application, a home visit, and a contract. We are a volunteer based, 501c3 nonprofit organization. All of our animals live in foster care with loving families as we search for their forever homes.

Additional adoption info

You will first be asked to complete an Adoption Application. An adoption coordinator will review your application and check necessary references including a vet reference ( when applicable) and personal references. They will also determine if the animal that you applied for is a good match for your home based on the responses you provide. If you are renting, we require proof that you are permitted to have a pet as well as determining if any breed or size restrictions may exist for your residence. Once you are pre-approved, a home visit is completed. A representative will visit your home to be sure it is a safe place for our adoptable as well as to answer any questions that you may have about an adoption. After the home visit, a contract is issued upon final approval.
