Rescue FAQs

The Pet Assistance League (PAL) is a non-profit organization that helps find homes for displaced and abandoned animals, primarily cats and dogs. Founded in 1986, the league has helped thousands of animals find permanent homes with caring families. PAL is run by a small and dedicated staff whose primary responsibilities include animal care, and adoptions. Our PAL volunteers provide adoption services for homeless pets in the Washington DC Metro area, and in Northern Virginia. Adoptive families for PAL pets have been found in many East Coast states. PAL animals are displayed for adoption at the PETSMART store located in Prince William County, near the Potomac Mills shopping center in Woodbridge, Virginia.
Prince William, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and some surrounding areas.

Additional adoption info

Anyone interested in adopting a pet from the Pet Assistance League should complete an adoption application form before coming in to see the currently available pets. This will make the process go a bit smoother as it reduces the amount of your time required in filling paperwork out at the store, and helps us get a better idea of what your needs are in advance. This way we can help try to determine what pets might be a good match for your situation. Not all pets are suited for all homes & vice-versa.

When coming to see a pet you are interested in adopting, please expect to spend at least one hour with the pet during the adoption process. It is important that you spend time with the pets in order to select a pet that is a good match for your family.

Adoption fees are charged for each pet adoption. The adoption fee helps us defray the cost of the animal's boarding and medical care. The adoption fee ranges from $125 to $250 per animal and takes into account whether spaying or neutering has already occurred. Animals made available for adoption may have recently had their health verified by one of the veterinarians who provide services to PAL, or a vet checkup may be recommended as something for you to have done after adoption. Health and shot records are provided when available. Where possible, we also test kittens over 12 weeks of age for Feline Aids and Feline Leukemia. Please Note: No test is 100% accurate for these viruses. For dogs, distemper & rabies vaccines and a heartworm test are administered if they are old enough for testing.

All Donations are tax deductible, we are non for profit 501(C) 3 charity, help homeless pets find permanent loving homes.
