Areas Humane Society of North Iowa serves

Our organization was founded over 50 years ago with the mission to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to displaced and neglected companion animals and educate the public about the humane care of animals with a goal of reducing overpopulation.

The heart of our mission is the operation of our newly constructed pet adoption center in Mason City, IA.

There are many ways you can be a part of our mission; Volunteering, donating, foster care, and animal socializing are just a few of the many ways you can show your support for the Humane Society of North Iowa.

Our new 6600 square foot facility houses almost 100 displaced, unwanted, and stray animals all looking for new homes. We serve a 10 county area in North Iowa. Counties served are Cerro Gordo, Butler, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Mitchell, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright Counties.

We hope you will come visit us soon!

Humane Society of North Iowa's adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first step in the adoption process is to complete and submit the Adoption Application for the animal you are interested in. An pre-set adoption fee is charged that covers the veterinarian work we have invested for each animal.

It is the belief of the Humane Society of North Iowa that every animal deserves a ”forever home” and it is our goal to place them into permanent homes where they will be loved and well cared for. Adopting an animal is not a decision to be taken lightly. Before filling out an Adoption Application, please take the time to consider whether or not you have the time, money, and proper living situation to offer a lifelong commitment to that animal.

About Humane Society of North Iowa

The Humane Society of North Iowa was founded in 1959 by Alice Anne Blackmore and was located on her farm in Mason City, IA. Alice Anne cared for hundreds of animals on this farm and created the beginning foundations of an animal rescue organization in North Iowa.

In 1986, David and Phyllis Murphy purchased a retiring Veterinarian’s office on the north end of Mason City and gifted the building to the Humane Society of North Iowa. Every square inch of this donated space was utilized to the fullest over the next two decades. Eventually, the demands of the organization had outgrown the size of the building and more space was needed.

In 2006, the MacNider family donated 6.5 acres of land to the Humane Society of North Iowa on which to construct a new facility. Blueprints were drawn up and plans for a Capital Campaign were made. In the summer of 2008, the “Making Miracles Happen” Capital Campaign was launched with a goal of $1 million dollars.

The Humane Society of North successfully concluded it’s campaign in just two short months having met it’s $1 million dollar goal. Ground was broken and a 6400 square foot facility was constructed and opened to the public in the summer of 2009. This new facility has space for more than 100 displaced animals and includes medical, grooming and quarantine areas.

The Humane Society of North Iowa is considered one of Iowa’s largest “no-kill” shelters, meaning that animals are not euthanized based on the length of time they've been in the shelter or due to a lack of space.

The Humane Society of North Iowa is proud of the work we've done for the animals, people and community in which we serve. In the past 25 years, the Humane Society of North Iowa has found loving homes for over 8000 abandoned, displaced, and neglected animals!!

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
