Shelter FAQs

The Yancey Humane Society & Animal Shelter is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, just 30 miles northeast of Asheville. We take all animals brought to us: strays, ferals, dogs, cats, and also, personal pets on a case by case basis. We provide a loving temporary home until they can be placed in a permanent home. We are not a "no kill" shelter, however, we do not euthanise for time nor space. We treat all animals as individuals and temperament test them for adoptability. This way, no one slips through the system, and we know each and every personality in the house. So, if you are looking for a pet, we can help match you with the perfect friend who will fit your lifestyle.

Additional adoption info

Our current adoption fee for dogs over 6 months is $85 and up. Puppies under 6 months are $200 and all cats and kittens are $35 and we encourage BOGO. Occasionally, we have reduced fees based on the shelter population. Cats and kittens are currently two for one adoption fee. This fee includes worming, age appropriate vaccinations, micro-chipping (for dogs), and basic spay/neuter costs. All animals will be spayed or neutered before going home. You may pay our adoption fee and do an adoption questionnaire over the phone by calling 828-682-9510.

We welcome and are grateful for all donations. Our paypal donation email is the same as the shelter. ychs@ccvn.com
