Animals' Resource Fund

Every year in the Kansas City area, more than 40,000 unwanted animals are put to death in animal shelters and dog pounds. Thousands more die of exposure, starve to death or are hit by vehicles. We attempt to alleviate some of this suffering by finding homes for unwanted animals and by promoting the spaying and neutering of pets.

ARF is an all-volunteer, non-profit humane society dedicated to placing homeless animals into loving, permanent homes and to reducing the pet overpopulation crisis in the Kansas City area.

ARF animals come from a variety of places. Some are rescued from dog pounds just before their time is up; some are no longer wanted by their owners; and some are strays picked up by volunteers.

We do not operate out of an animal shelter. Therefore, volunteers foster-home adoptable animals in their own homes. ARF provides the foster families with pet food, pet supplies and any necessary veterinary care; the foster families provide the pets with a loving, temporary home.

Since we do not have an animal shelter from which to operate, we have "adoption clinics" once a month, where we bring all of the available dogs, cats, and other animals to a central location. At the adoption clinics, prospective adopters can see the animals, interact with them, ask us questions about them and initiate the adoption process.

We make every effort to spay or neuter all of our adoptable animals that are at least six months of age. If an animal is not yet six months of age when it is adopted, or if we are unable to spay or neuter for some reason, we require the adopter to pay a spay/neuter deposit that is refunded when the animal is spayed or neutered.

We also offer financial assistance to individuals for spaying or neutering their pets. If you need help in getting your animal spayed or neutered, please contact us.

Additional adoption info

To adopt an animal from ARF, you must first complete an adoption application, in which you will provide us with pertinent information about yourself. You will then be interviewed by one of our volunteers to determine which animal will best fit into your lifestyle.

Because adopting a pet is a serious commitment, after you are matched with a pet, you will be required to wait three days before the adoption takes place. After the three-day waiting period is fulfilled, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and make an adoption donation.

If the animal is not yet spayed or neutered, you will be required to pay a spay/neuter deposit that will be refunded to you once you have spayed or neutered the pet.

When making the adoption donation, you are not purchasing the pet. You are making a tax-deductible donation that allows us to continue helping other animals.
