Feel free to ask if there is information you feel we have not covered - the time to research a dog is BEFORE you make your final choice.

We are located in Central Indiana but long distance adoptions are fine so long as we are able to arrange a home check with a rescue in your area. We've adopted dogs to homes as far away as Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama and Michigan. No dogs will be adopted without a home check and either proof of home ownership or landlord approval.

Please do not take exception with our desire to verify your ability to provide a good home to a dog in need! We do not mean for adopting a dog to be an overly complicated or invasive process. However, you must remember that all of our dogs have been failed in some way by their former owners or they would not be with us. Some have been rescued from situations of neglect and abuse, while others were abandoned by their caretakers when the responsibility of owning a pet became an inconvenience.

We feel very strongly that it is our responsibility to ensure that our dogs never have to endure those situations again. We don't want to look in your closets and we don't care if the dishes need done. We only want to verify that you are able to provide a safe and caring environment for a dog in need. But please remember that these dogs have been in our homes and our hearts. We will not place them hurriedly or carelessly – Your understanding and patience are much appreciated!

All dogs start their adoptions with a two week trial period. This is kind of a "test drive" for you and the dog. Within this time frame you should have a pretty good idea if you and your new dog are going to be a good match. Remember that a dog is a 13 to 15 year commitment and, like a child, they depend on you to make sure that all of their needs are met.

Many dogs in shelters are there only because their family had a change of lifestyle. Their owners got married, got divorced, had children, moved, or just got too busy to have time for the dog they so adored only a couple of short years ago. Obviously these owners had not taken to the time to thoroughly think about their decision to add a pet to their lives.

We encourage all of our adoptive owners to attend at least a basic obedience course with their new dog. Not only is an obedience-trained pit bull a better pet but it’s also an excellent way to bond with your new dog. Plus a well-trained Pit Bull in public makes for some much-needed positive PR for the breed. And of course we are always available for behavior and training advice. All dogs adopted with in driving distance of Indianapolis will come with pre-paid basic obedience classes courtesy of a kind HHPBR sponsor.

All of our dogs have been evaluated in a family environment and in most cases started on their housebreaking and crate training. How complete this process is will depend on how long a dog has been with us. Although the average stay for a dog is 6 to 8 months, it can vary widely from dog to dog.

The adoption fee is $150.00 - this covers the dogs’ spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing, heartworm preventative as well as testing, and treatment (if needed) for internal parasites. We are entirely volunteer staffed and rely 100% on our adoption fees and donations to provide for the dogs in our care.
