ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Picture
Initially volunteers ran CHA (or CAL - Chequamegon Animal League- as it was then known) out of their homes until a parcel of land was obtained from the City of Ashland on Old Airport Road. The current building was constructed in two phases: The indoor/outdoor dog runs came first and the cat room and office were added at a later date. Up until the mid-1990’s, there was no preventative care given to the cats and dogs adopted out; no vaccines were given and the animals were not spayed or neutered. The average annual budget was around $10,000/year, most of which came from Ashland and Bayfield counties for animal control.

In 1994 CHA received a generous bequeath, which allowed the organization to implement a minimum standard of care so that only spayed and neutered animals up-to-date on vaccinations were released for adoption. This was the first step toward changing the continuous flow of unwanted cats and dogs in our area.

Since then CHA has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for homeless pets by providing medical care and socialization to every cat and dog that comes through our doors. We have also reached out to the community with low-cost spay/neuter options for low-income households. The staff and board of directors sincerely hope you will join us in continuously making our community a better place for all pets and their people. If you have some time, why not take the volunteer training session (first Sunday of each month at noon) so you can spend some quality time with the cats or take a dog for a walk on the newly improved shelter property trails.
