Rescue FAQs

Compassion for Greyhounds was founded in May of 2003 for the sole purpose of educating the public about the true personality of the greyhound breed. Our main goal is to alleviate common misconceptions many still have about this gentle, majestic breed, and too find loving qualified homes for these hounds. With this, Compassion for Greyhounds provides ongoing support to those who adopt a greyhound. In addition to the above mentioned goals, Compassion for Greyhounds has taken on the mission to unite all greyhound adoption organizations for this same purpose, as well as to assist greyhounds in finding groups to help them get home. We want to build a collaboration for the sole purpose of greyhound adoption. Compassion for Greyhounds is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is registered with the state of Michigan. This organization is run solely by volunteers who give up their time, energy and money for the greyhounds taken in. We receive no compensation for our work, other than the true joy of seeing greyhounds united with their loving families. Without the volunteers and people like you, Compassion for Greyhounds would not exist, and for that, we thank you.
CfG places greyhounds across the state of Michigan and near by states.

Additional adoption info

Application: An adoption application can be completed online or you can contact us and we will send you one via snail mail. Complete the application and return it to CfG.

Application Review: We will review your application and an Adoption Specialist will contact you. We will answer any questions you may have. After receiving your application and making initial contact with you, we will check your personal and vet references. After references are completed, the Adoption Specialist will contact you to schedule a home visit at a time convenient to all.

Home Visit: During the home visit, the adoption counselors bring a greyhound or two to visit so that you and your family have the chance to interact with a greyhound in your own home. These visits are necessary so that you can see what it is like to have a greyhound in your home and it gives us the opportunity to talk with you one-on-one about the joys of adopting a retired racing greyhound.

Application Approval: If your application is approved, the Adoption Specialist will speak with you about what type of greyhound would do best in your home. We will talk with you about different personality types and what you are looking for in your new family member.

The Wait: The adoption process can take from 2 - 6 weeks. If we currently don't have a greyhound that would be a match, we will have to wait until we get the right dog for you.

Please keep in mind that not all individuals or homes are right for a retired racing greyhound. Submitting an application to Compassion for Greyhounds is not a guarantee that you will be approved to adopt a greyhound.
