Shelter FAQs

Dane County Humane Society is an open admission animal shelter located in Madison, WI. We are the stray holding facility for all of DaneCounty but accept any surrendered animal from any city, town, or county.

Adoption steps

  1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
    The first step is to visit us and find the pets you are interested in meeting.
  2. Meet the Pet
    Our trained adoption counselors will help you visit with the pets you are interested in.
  3. Interview
    An adoption counselor will meet with you to tell you everything we know about the pet you are interested in and answer all your questions.
  4. Sign Adoption Contract
    If you find a pet to join your family, we will ask you to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee.
  5. Take the Pet Home
    Most of our animals are ready to go with you the same day. However, we can hold an animal for you for 24 hours with a $20 deposit.
