Society for Animals in Distress

The Society for Animals in Distress was founded in 1971 in Toronto by Mr. Alan McGinn. He started the Society in response to the Animals for Research Act, which allowed stray animals in pounds and humane societies to be seized for medical research if not claimed within three days. The Society for Animals in Distress has successfully operated shelters in Toronto, Cambridge, Cobourg and Apsley before moving to Elliot Lake in 1995.
Mr. McGinn passed away in February 2000, but his legacy lives on and we continue his work.
The shelter is open Monday - Friday 8 am - 3 pm by appointment only.
