Animal shelter in Fayetteville, NC

The mission of Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, Inc. (FAPS) is to provide a licensed, No-Kill shelter for homeless animals until adopted into a loving and caring lifetime environment; to reduce the population of stray animals; and to promote responsible pet ownership.

Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, Inc. (FAPS) is the only Cumberland County No-Kill, non-profit animal shelter supported by volunteers, grants and individual contributions. FAPS receives no state or federal funding to operate and relies solely on the community to support its mission in rescuing, shelter and successfully placing companion animals.

One of the biggest keys to FAPS' success is owed to the countless volunteers and small staff, who walk dogs, play with cats, donate food, toys and bedding, clean kennels, help with general shelter maintenance and yard work, answer phones, help with bulk mailings and many other tasks that are too numerous to mention. It is through the generosity of others that we are able to run Cumberland County’s only state-licensed, non-profit, No-Kill shelter.

If you are looking for a new addition to your family, we are here to help. Come see us!

*Adoption fees subject to change at any time and without notice.

Spay (female) or neuter (male), microchipped and registered to you, full vaccinations, deworming, heartworm tested, heartworm treated (dogs), heartworm preventative, FeLV/FIV tested (cats), flea & tick preventative, and any other needed medical care. All adopted shelter pets come with a 30-day gift of "Pet Insurance," courtesy of Shelter Care.

Our Adoption Policy:
THE BASICS: These requirements must be met prior to finalization of adoption but not prior to visiting and starting the adoption process.
You must be 18 years of age or older.
Must have photo identification showing your present address.
Have the knowledge and proof of consent from your landlord. (Lease stating pet terms, pet addendum, proof of pet deposit, etc.)
If you own your home, you must show proof of ownership via tax bill, mortgage statement etc. No worries, you can black out anything other than name, address and the type of proof document.
Be willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, veterinary care/treatment, and proper care for your pet.
All family members must come and meet the pet, including family dogs to insure everyone “gets along”.

FAPS does not adopt out based on a “first come-first served” basis and rarely do “same day” adoptions because we have an application process and prescheduled consultations. If you are traveling from out of town, let us know in advance so that you and we can prepare for a “same day” if it looks like a good match. We are here to help you find a pet that will fit your needs and lifestyle and we want our pets to find prepared, loving, appropriate and permanent homes. This is our priority. We go to great lengths to ensure a proper match for the benefit of everyone involved and we are flexible if we know a perfect home is waiting for one of our furkids!. Very few of our pets are returned because we strive for a win/win for the family and the pet.

We encourage you to start with a visit! We have two large off-lead dog areas, a huge on-leash walking area and two free-roam cat areas to get to know our animals. Bring the family, bring the family dog(s) if you have any, and make an afternoon of it. Spend as much or little time as you like playing our walking the dogs or petting the kitties and see who strikes your fancy. Then, if you find one that seems like a good match to you, complete our adoption application. We consider all applications, so don’t worry a pet may be “snatched up” if you don’t take him or her home that day. That’s just not how we work.

If it’s a good match, we’ll set you up for a consultation where we just discuss the history of the pet, what you might or might not expect from him or her, any special considerations (energy level, exercise needs, behavioral hiccups, ect…) their best qualities, their naughty ones… we will always be honest about our animals because we want our adoptions to last for life! If after this discussion you and the counselor are on the same page…you may take the pet home that day or a later date (within reason) that works for your schedule.

The consultation process is designed to help us determine if the adoption meets your and that specific pet’s needs. It isn’t a job interview…no need to be nervous! It’s a two-way conversation that usually ends with adoption, sometimes ends with reconsideration of pet choice (and a better suited pet is adopted) and sometimes (albeit rarely) ends with reconsideration of adoption in general.

FAPS reserves the right to deny the adoption of any pet for any or no reason.

WE FULLY EXPECT THIS DOG OR CAT TO BE A LIFETIME COMMITMENT.
