Rescue FAQs

Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) is a national 501(c)3 corporation organized completely by volunteers who are dedicated to finding responsible, loving homes for professional racing greyhounds who no longer qualify to compete at the racetrack. GPA is neutral on the subject of the greyhound racing industry. Our goal is to find responsible, loving homes for racing greyhounds who no longer qualify to compete at the racetrack. GPA was founded in 1987 and works extensively with the racing industry to encourage its involvement with adoption efforts. The American Greyhound Council, a racing industry-sponsored organization established for the welfare of the greyhounds, began funding a nationwide 800-number service (800-366-1472) in June, 1990. It asked GPA, as the largest greyhound adoption organization, to administer this service. Since then, GPA has fielded thousands of inquiries about greyhound adoption and sent prospective adopters to the nearest adoption agency. In 1993, GPA assisted in the adoption of 3,188 greyhounds. In 2000, its member chapters adopted out 4,686. The GPA adoption program depends on donations and volunteers to accomplish its goal. Whether you send a donation to the national GPA or to one of our member chapters, your donation will be tax-deductible.

Additional adoption info

All prospective adopters must complete a GPA/Louisville adoption application, available at http://www.GPALouisville.org. Once the application is received, a home visit will be scheduled. If approved, GPA/Louisville will attempt to identify and obtain the retired racing Greyhound we believe will be a suitable match for the new adoptive family.

The adoption fee is $250, which includes spaying/neutering, teeth cleaning, bloodwork, up-to-date immunizations, etc. as well as microchipping.
