The City of Harlan pound serves only the corporate limits of the town. We're 60 miles east of Omaha, NE and 90 miles west of Des Moines, IA; 11 miles north of I-80.

We do ask for vet references. The adoption fee is $5 and a $20 refundable bond is required for animals that have not been sterilized. By Iowa law, all intact animals must be sterilized within 30 days with some allowance for small kittens or puppies. On occasion, spay or neuter rebates may be available. A photo ID is required at adoption and we may ask for any other information we deem necessary before adoption.

4PAWS is a volunteer group working with animals available for adoption through the City of Harlan, Iowa Pound. We've been active since the fall of 2003 and place about 110 animals per year. Generous donations, fundraisers and our annual garage sale allow us to pay for administrative and animal care expenses.

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
