Shelter FAQs

Our mission is to promote the value of animals through care and education. We are an open-admission shelter serving the homeless animal population, and promoting responsible pet ownership, including spay/neuter. Animals do not run out of time at Prairie's Edge Humane Society they stay with us either at the shelter or in foster homes until they are adopted into their forever home. We are a non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation. We rely on the generosity of individuals and local businesses to provide our services.
Prairie's Edge Humane Society is a non-profit organization serving southern MN since 1985.

Additional adoption info

Prior to adopting a pet from Prairie’s Edge Humane Society, you will need to personally visit and spend time with the animal at the shelter or foster home. If you have a spouse and children we will also ask that the entire family meet with the animal before the adoption is approved. If you are adopting a dog and currently have a dog, prior to the adoption being approved we will ask you to set up an appointment to bring your current dog to meet the new dog so that we are sure the two dogs will be compatible.

Please be aware that all applications must be approved by our staff. If you rent your home a staff member from Prairie’s Edge Humane Society will need to talk directly to your landlord to verify that pets are allowed at the property you rent. Please bring your landlords current phone number with you. If you rent your home our staff cannot approve the adoption until your landlord has been reached.

Certain animals may require a manager approval for adoption so you may or may not be able to take the animal home with you on the same day, however we are able to place a “hold” on the animal for 24 hours for a nominal fee which is applied towards the adoption fee, preventing the animal from being adopted by anyone else should this be required. If you do not return in 24 hours to claim the animal however the fee is non-refundable.

If you are adopting a cat, please come prepared with a kennel/carrier for safe transport from the shelter to your home. No cat will be allowed to leave without being secured in a kennel/carrier. This is also true for other small furries, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, birds, etc.

All dogs are currently housed in foster homes. Once you have decided on a dog you might like to meet or if you have questions about a specific dog, please contact the shelter at 507-664-1035 and we will put you in contact with the foster family to make arrangements for meeting the dog or to answer questions in regards to the dog. If you decide to adopt the dog, you will be required to come to the shelter to finalize the adoption.

All dogs will be required to either be on a leash or in a kennel/carrier for transport from the shelter/foster home to your home. If you do not bring one with you, we do sell a variety of inexpensive collars, leashes, easy walk harnesses and gentle leaders in our retail area.

Since all animals have individual needs all adoptions are handled on a case by case situation depending on the animal you are adopting.
