Why adopt from AHS?

Animal Humane Society is here for animals that have nowhere else to go. They arrive at our shelters for a variety of reasons, but no matter the circumstances, they’re all patiently waiting for the same things: love, security, and a family to call their own. That’s where you come in.

When you adopt, you’re giving one loving animal the second chance it deserves — and freeing up shelter resources to help another animal in need. Every day, dogs, cats, and critters are euthanized at shelters across the U.S. simply because there’s nobody willing to adopt them. We work hard to make sure that’s not the case in our community. Thanks to our amazing adopters, last year we were able find placement for more than 22,000 animals in our care.

Adoption policies and procedures

All animals that are available for adoption at Animal Humane Society have passed an evaluation based on their known history, health and temperament. If you wish to put an animal on hold or to adopt an animal from AHS, you must be present at an AHS adoption center.

If you find an animal you wish to adopt, we’ll sit down for an informal consultation to ensure that you and the pet you’ve selected are a good match. During this process, we'll also review the animal’s medical and behavioral records, explain policies and services available to adopters, and help you choose the right pet supplies.

Post-adoption medical care

All dogs and cats are vaccinated and treated for parasites before they become available for adoption. Read more about what's included in your adoption fees for information about treatment in shelter.

At the time of adoption, you will receive paperwork detailing specific medical information about your new pet. The medical history report will list vaccinations, medications, and procedures your new pet has received during its stay at AHS. You will also receive a Health Confirmation form, which includes detailed information about post-adoption medical care.

Please consult your veterinarian regarding other veterinary procedures that may be needed. Follow-up treatment such as additional de-wormings and booster vaccinations are your responsibility and will be at your expense.

You can learn more about our adoption process by visiting our website at or calling us at 952-435-7738.
