Shelter FAQs

Founded in 1911, the New Rochelle Humane Society is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing individual loving care for lost, abandoned, injured, and mistreated animals. We service 17 communities in Westchester County and rescue over 500 dogs and 900 cats each year.

About 50% of the shelter’s funding is from services provided for animal control (rescuing homeless cats and dogs). The other 50% comes from donations, wills and bequests. We do not receive any state or federal funding.

Audited by a CPA each year, we make our tax filings available for public inspection and we meet all standards of the New York Philanthropic Advisory Service of the Better Business Bureau. Our Board of Directors is comprised entirely of volunteers.
We adopt our to people from the Tri-State area. The Humane Society of Westchester provides animal rescue for the following towns and villages in lower Westcheter County.New Rochelle, Larchmont, Pelham Manor, Eastchester, Scarsdale, Village of Mamaroneck, City of Rye, RyeBrook, Harrison, Greenburgh, Elmsford, Tarrytown, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley and Hastings.
When space permits we will rescue dogs and cats from beyond these areas.

Additional adoption info

If you see an animal on our website who you would like more information about, please call us at 914-632-2925
Our adoption counselors are happy to discuss the personalities and needs of each animal with you. If you are unsure of exactly what you are looking for in a pet, we can help you find an animal who best suits your lifestyle. The first step in our adoption process is to complete a pre-adoption questionnaire available at https://humanesocietyofwestchester.org/information-about-adopting-a-pet/ The pre-adoption questionnaire is designed so that we can better assist you. Please choose from one of the options below to adopt a dog, a cat or a small animal:

After you submit the pre-adoption questionnaire please call and speak with an adoption counselor. They will schedule a “meet and greet” adoption appointment, where you can interact with the animal of your choice in a private room and get to know each other better. In most cases, your new companion can go home with you the same day, However, we do not guarantee same day adoptions.
