Additional adoption info

Cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, fancy rats… and many more species we rescue, who are available for adoption from Empty Cages Collective have been rescued from abandonment, neglect, abuse and other forms of cruelty. Some have been exploited in animal experimentation, while others have been neglected and abandoned by irresponsible guardians.

We want to ensure that mistreatment is a thing of the past for the animals we care for. With that in mind, we are seeking serious, responsible adopters committed to the humane treatment of animals. Adoption requires an approved adoption application, FaceTime interview and enclosure showing (in case of small animals), and an adoption donation.

All of our cats, dogs and rabbits have been spayed/neutered.
Cats and dogs are also vaccinated, most are microchipped, they had their blood work done, and have been treated for fleas and parasites, as well as any other illnesses/conditions our vets may have noticed.
Guinea pigs, fancy rats, hamsters and other small animals are not spayed/neutered, but it can be done so prior adoption, if deemed safe by our veterinarian.

About Empty Cages Collective

The Empty Cages Collective (ECC) is a New York-based animal rescue and advocacy organization. ECC aims to cultivate a culture where animals are recognized as fellow sentient beings worthy of respectful and compassionate treatment. Through advocacy, education, hands-on rescue and assistance, the ECC envisions a world free of animal exploitation, abuse, and ecologically destructive behavior.

ECC consistently rescues companion animals from being killed at the municipal shelters, from hard lives as strays on the street, and from situations of neglect. These animals at a minimum need basic veterinary care, foster homes and food and supplies, but often also require extended hospital stays and intense socialization or training. Once ready for adoption, we place the animals into loving, permanent homes who can provide them with the care they need and deserve. Apart from companion animals including cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, we also assist with species that few other groups save. We take in mice and rats who would otherwise be killed when animal experimentation in laboratories has ceased. ECC rescues, rehabilitates, and releases the city's neglected and under-appreciated urban wildlife, including pigeons and also rescues and rehabilitates abandoned or escaped “farmed” animals and finds them lifelong placement in sanctuaries.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
