Rescue FAQs

Hounds of the Heartland is a non-profit humane organization dedicated to finding loving, responsible homes for both retired racing greyhounds that can no longer compete and for young greyhounds not placed on the racetrack. Our aim is to let the public know what excellent, loving pets these noble dogs make. We are an incorporated, 501-c3 not for profit group under the national direction of Greyhound Pets of America.
based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and serve the central Oklahoma area.

Additional adoption info

Step 1) Fill out this application either online or print and mail to us. Note: online applications are received immediately and are processed faster than those received by mail.

Step 2) "Reference Check" -- An adoption volunteer will call your references and your Vet to discuss your potential adoption with them

Step 3) "Getting to Know You" -- The Volunteer will call/e-mail you to discuss your lifestyle and family to determine which greyhound is best suited for your home

Step 4) "Home Visit" -- The Volunteer will come to your home to complete the "Home Visit." This is for safety purposes only, and we appreciate you allowing us to give you suggestions as to how to make your home safer for your new family member.

Step 5) "Dog Arrival" -- The Volunteer will schedule a time to bring the dog to your home. The Volunteer will ensure you and the dog are comfortable. At this time we will collect the $200 adoption fee and hold until the adoption is finalized, if during the trial period you feel a greyhound is not for you, the check will be returned to you when we come to pick up the dog.

Step 6) "Trial Period and Follow Up" -- We will call/email you several times during the first 2 weeks to ensure you and your new greyhound are adjusting well.

Step 7) "Adoption Day" -- After the two week trial period, if everyone is comfortable the adoption is finalized by completing the GPA Adoption Contract. At this time ownership of the dog is officially transferred, including Vet Records, Proof of Heartworm medication, and your payment receipt.
