Shelter FAQs

The Tonkawa Tribe is the first Tribe in the state of Oklahoma to have an Animal Welfare program. They decided to do this due to the number of unwanted animals being dumped on the reservation from local small towns. Most of the dogs and cats on the Tonkawa Reservation have been dumped from people near the area. The residences here are low income homes and can’t afford to take care of the dumped animals, but do the best they can. A majority of the dogs placed in the shelter are malnourished, never been to a vet, never had a home or shelter and some of them have never had anyone to show them what love really is. Normally the only food they get is from trash left in dumpsters. Despite all this when I pick up a dog and have them for a couple of days at the shelter they show no fear and lots of love towards anyone that will pay them some attention. There are times I will go to the shelter and a dog will be sitting at the gate waiting on me to let them in because the dog is hungry, thirsty and/or wants attention. There has been times I have found where a dog has tried to dig in to the kennels.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption fee is 0 to 50.00. You must have a fenced in back yard and the pet must be spayed or neutered 30 days after adoption. We do recommend that you take your pet to your vet as soon as you adopt for a checkup. If shipped new owner must pay all fees. If you are adopting a Pit Bull a letter of recommendation from a local vet and shelter must be sent.
