Shelter FAQs

Chesapeake Humane Society supports the residents of Chesapeake and surrounding cities homeless and owned animals by providing high quality, low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations, pet medications, adoptions and behavior help. In addition, we provide medical treatment to shelter animals in immediate need and facilitate off-site adoptions on behalf of Chesapeake Animal Services increasing the Live Release Rate of animals from the City shelter. In 2018, we touched the lives of more than 7,000 animals.

Additional adoption info

You are welcome to visit the animals in residence with us on a walk-in basis Tuesday through Saturday 12AM to 4PM. Sunday meetings are by appointment only. We are closed on Mondays. Please feel free to call or email for an appointment to meet our adoptable pets.

We pride ourselves on offering one-on-one private adoption counseling. Once you have completed your adoption application (online) an adoption counselor will contact you for a private interview.

Our adoption fees and requirements vary based on each individual animal's needs. We work hand-in-hand with our adoption clients and hand-in-paw with our pets to make the best adoption matches.

In spite of our efforts, we understand that sometimes relationships fail. If at any time an adopter needs assistance with their new family member or finds it necessary to return their companion animal, we will respectfully work with that client to determine the best outcome for the animal.
