We at the Purr Project are eager and excited to help you through the process that may match you with a life long friend and companion. Go to www.purrproject.org/application to download an application. The cats that get accepted to our program have in most cases been sick and/or injured because our objective is to accept cats that otherwise would have been euthanized. These ailments may include everything from broken bones to respiratory infections. This objective makes us different from most other feline adoption agencies.
With our objective in mind, our cats often come to us afraid, malnourished and suffering from exposure. It becomes our duty and pleasure then, to provide care and comfort to these animals that have been abandoned. Over the course of each cat’s stay, they truly become members of our family. Therefore, remember a couple points*: 1) Although we do not do home visits, our application is thorough. 2) The process takes time because we do check references so your application must be filled out completely – incomplete applications will be thrown out. 3) You will be given a cat that is to the best of our knowledge and in good faith is happy and healthy at that time. There is no guarantee that health or behavior problems will not arise in the future. 4) Kittens are $125 and Adults are $80.
The Purr project is an organization made up solely of a small group of dedicated, non-paid volunteers who serve on our own time. We are also not a part of New Haven Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine, so also remember: 1) We try our hardest to get back to applicants promptly about their applications but in some cases – depending on the number of applications - it may take up to 7 days for us to contact you so please be patient with us. 2) Although hospital employees at the front desk and on the phone are helpful, they may not be able to answer many of the questions that you may have about the Purr Project. 3) Adoptions are handled on a first come first serve basis.
Your question may then become, “What happens after I fill out the Application”?
Here is what to expect after you return your application: 1) volunteers will gather completed applications. – 3 to 7 days
2) volunteers will call prospective parents to set up interview and check references. – 3 to 5 days after step 1. 3)volunteers will call prospective parents to set up “cat show”. - 3 to 5 days after step 2. In many cases you become a new parent that day!
I assure you that waiting is the most difficult part of the process. I can also assure you that for those who are willing to go through our process will become the parent of someone that we care about, as well as family to us.
