Shelter FAQs

PALS’ mission is to provide care and shelter for homeless or unwanted animals, to strive to find permanent, loving homes for these animals, to educate children and adults in our communities on the humane treatment of animals, and on the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation.

PALS has worked extremely hard to provide our county with a shelter. Prior to our opening, the only option for stray animals picked up by city police and sheriff’s departments in Poweshiek County was a 7-day stay at local veterinary clinics. If owners or an adopting family were not found in that short period of time, the animals were then euthanized. PALS has stepped in not only to provide a safe haven for these homeless animals, but to also ensure they receive responsible vet care including spay/neuters, shots, deworming, and flea/tick control, as well as addressing any emergency medical concerns. We are happy to report that we have helped more than 1000 animals find loving homes!
PALS serves all of Poweshiek County, Iowa, and beyond.

Additional adoption info

Cats may be adopted for $90, which includes spay/neuter, shots, microchipping, FeLV/Fiv test (for cats over the age of 1), and deworming. Dogs may be adopted for $175 ($150 for dogs over 6yrs, $250 for under 1 year), which includes neuter/spay, microchipping, deworming, heartworm test, and shots. Adoption fees may vary in some cases.

Please be patient with us - we're taking care of a lot of furkids - our own and the PALS kids - and we are all volunteers with families, homes and full time jobs. We'll return email and phone inquiries just as fast as we pawssibly can. Thanks!

ADOPTION DONATIONS: Adoption donations for PALS animals go directly either to medical care for those or other furkids in need, or towards maintenance and improvement of our shelter!
