Rescue FAQs

Happy Tails Rescue is a 100% volunteer organization. When we accept a dog into our rescue, it immediately becomes part of a foster family where it is loved and nurtured back to a stable physical and/or mental state and only then will it be adopted to a fully screened, loving family or individual. Happy Tails is a small rescue where we get to know and love our dogs individually. Foster homes are always much needed as it's so sad to have to turn down a dog in need due to not having a space for them :(
We are a not-for-profit, volunteer organization based in the Greater Toronto/Southern Ontario area of Ontario, Canada, dedicated to rescuing unwanted, neglected or otherwise unfortunate Bichon-Frise, Maltese, and other small breeds and adopting them to new loving, permanent homes.

Additional adoption info

We get inquiries about dogs posted on our website at www.happytailsrescue.ca. The adoption fees are posted on the individual dog's bio. If the initial inquiry sounds like a possible fit or the family sounds like they might offer a very good home for a specific dog or one as yet to be determined, we send out an application form. The completed application is reviewed to get a sense of whether the desires and life style of the family look like a good match for the dog in question. If they do seem to be a good match at that point, we follow up with a phone conversation and gather more information so that we and share information about the dog in more detail and find out what expectations the adopter may have for the dog that they want to adopt. If it still looks like a match, we check references and set up a home visit where the family meets the dog. If the chemistry is good we arrange to place the dog in the home for a two week trial period . If after the two weeks the dog and the family have connected and both sides feel that the dog is the right one for them , then the adoption is finalized and the adoption fee cheque is cashed so that we have funds to help the next dog in need.
