Rescue FAQs
Dire Straits is a small all-volunteer organization that was started in 2007 to rescue injured, abused and neglected dogs and cats. Our rescues often require extensive medical care and recuperation time for their injuries. They are cared for in foster homes and all medical expenses are covered by donations and adoption fees. We are always in need of more quality foster homes and we are very thankful for any donations that come our way. If you are interested in providing a foster home for a needy dog or cat or would like to make a donation toward medical care, please email Jan at: direstraitsresq@mail.com.
We adopt to families in Wheaton, West Chicago, Batavia, Naperville and surrounding areas.
Additional adoption info
Our adoption process begins with our adoption application. After filling out the application, potential adopters will be contacted by email or phone. If the applicant seems to be a good match for the dog or cat they are interested in, we will set up a home visit with the pet. All family members and other pets must be present at the time of the visit. There is an adoption fee that covers vet exam, vaccinations, heartworm or combo testing, deworming, spay/neuter, microchip and microchip registration, along with any other medical care needed. Adoption fees for dogs range from $250 to $325 and cats are $125 to $175.
