Rescue FAQs

Battle Mountain Humane Society is a 501 (c) 3, all-volunteer, no-kill shelter in Hot Springs, SD. Our mission is to provide comprehensive care in a loving and safe environment to animals in need in Fall River County, SD and the surrounding areas, while reducing the number of animals in need of rescue and promoting kindness towards animals in the community. We love our animals and work to improve their lives. We have struggle a lot this year and faced challenges that we never expected, but the adversity deepened our commitment to serve animals. Our shelter burned down in an electrical fire on April 4, 2012. We are thankful that 80 of the 92 dogs in our care at that time survived. We have incurred thousands of dollars in veterinary bills in the last three months providing life-saving care to animals. We are in need of donations to cover the expenses associated with rebuilding, veterinary bills, and basic dog care needs. We accept donations of pet supplies and dog food (Purina or other high-quality food). We are currently in desperate need of completing and heating the inside of our building. We operate with volunteers and are always looking for people who want to help in any capacity. If you want to volunteer with us, we'll find a job that suits you.

Additional adoption info

Dog adoptions are $75. In special cases, the adoption fee may be more. Cat adoptions are a suggested donation of $30. You will be asked to complete an adoption application to help us match you with a dog or cat. You must supply contact information for a personal reference, veterinary reference, and landlord approval (if applicable). After you select a dog or cat, a home visit will be scheduled. If your home meets the needs of the dog or cat you selected, your adoption will be completed at that time. You will be asked to sign an adoption contract indicating that you will provide proper nutrition, shelter, and veterinary care to your dog or cat. You must agree to safely return your dog or cat to Battle Mountain Humane Society if you are no longer able to provide sufficient care to him or her, unless other arrangements are made with the approval of BMHS.
