Shelter FAQs

The Vanderburgh Humane Society, Inc. (VHS), a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1957. We receive no tax-based funding whatsoever. Therefore, we depend on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much needed services we offer.

Our mission:
Leading our community to eliminate pet overpopulation through Spay/Neuter, Adoption, and Humane Education. Alter. Adopt. Adore.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
Save time by submitting your application prior to arriving at the shelter!
  2. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
It's impossible to know whether a pet may be a good fit for you, just from an online photo. Visit us during Adoption Hours!
  3. Interview
We will discuss what you are looking for in a pet, so we can help make the best match possible for your family!
  4. Approve Application
  5. Sign Adoption Contract
  6. Pay Fee
  7. Take the Pet Home
If the pet is already spayed/neutered, and we're not waiting on a meet & greet or medical results to come back, the pet can go home TODAY!
