Areas Limestone Animal Rescue & Adoption Shelter (LARAS House) serves

We are based in Mexia, Texas and serve Limestone County and surrounding areas. Our intakes usually come from Limestone County, Freestone County, Leon County, Navarro County, McClennan County and sometimes much further. People that are seeking a no-kill shelter come to LARAS House. We adopt well beyond those boundaries for the right 'forever home' fit. We adopt out-of-state as well and partner with Rescues and Shelters across the United States.

Submit Application

Please submit an inquiry/application for the pet(s) you are interested in meeting. Upon approval, an adoption coordinator will contact you.

Meet the Pet

At the Shelter ,at a designated meeting site or via Facetime, or Zoom

3.

Sign Adoption Contract

Commit to the continued health and welfare of the animal. Including spay/neuter and required vaccinations if not done at time of adoption.

4.

Pay Fee

Fees vary based on animal type and stage in the vetting process based on intake date and/or age of animal.

5.

Take the Pet Home

Be sure to bring a collar, leash, crate, etc. with you when you come to pick your new pet up. We wish you all a wonderful life together!

We want to ensure our adoptable pets will be adequately cared for in their new forever homes.

If interested in any of our pets, call or email to set up an appointment If an animal is in foster care, you will need to schedule a time to visit so that we can ensure the pet you are interested in can be brought to the shelter for a meet-n-greet.

Once a decision to adopt has been made, a contract will be signed with commitments by the adopters to maintain the health and welfare of the animal, including future spay/neuter (if not already completed), along with ongoing rabies and other annual vaccinations. Fees vary based on age of the animal and the stage it is in the vetting process, For fully vetted dogs (shots, including rabies, spay/neuter, and micro-chip), the fees range from $125-$200..

LARAS House is a 501(c)3 No Kill Animal Rescue Organization located in Mexia, Limestone County, Texas. The organization started in 2008, and our shelter opened it’s doors in 2010. At any given time we may house as many as 100 + dogs and puppies and often a similar number of cats and kittens at both the shelter and in our foster care homes.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
