Areas Heartstrings serves

Heartstrings serves the parishes of St. Martin, Iberia and Lafayette and also does some rescue in Lafourche Parish.
We try to help the citizens of the towns of Broussard, Lafayette, Youngsville, St. Martinville and New Iberia with information and solutions to problems they are having. This can be something simple like furnishing them a vaccine for their new puppy or kitten along with some dewormer or helping them to place their animals with rescue groups in neighboring states. We are NOT a shelter, but, from time to time, take in an orphaned kitten or puppy when space allows.
We encourage people who find homeless animals to try to keep them and give them suitable homes and love.

We also pull from local shelters when rescuers in other states have openings and help to arrange transportation thru Pilots n Paws or ground transport if applicable. We foster these animals on a limited basis, due to space restrictions.

Heartstrings's adoption process

Additional adoption info

We require that each potential adopter fill out an application so we can best judge whether the particular animal they are interested in would be suitable to their situation. Once the application process is completed, we then do home visits with the animal they have selected to make sure everything is as represented. At that time, a contract will be entered into, with both parties signing and agreeing to all terms.

Our adoption fee for 2014 is $150, which includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, including Rabies if age appropriate, HW negative check for dogs/puppies and FIV/FeLV negative result for cats. All animals will have been dewormed and placed on flea preventative. Adoptees have 2 weeks in which to perform their own vet check of their new pet, during which time animal can be returned for full refund.
After that date, refunds are at Heartstrings' discretion.

No dog/cat, puppy or kitten can be sold, transferred or otherwise given to another person without express permission of Heartstrings. Animal always reverts back to Heartstrings, should the new owner not be able to keep said pet. Spontaneous home visits by Heartstrings is a condition of the contract.

About Heartstrings

We believe that since human beings have created the pet overpopulation problem that human beings should be the ones to fix it. We also know that by opening one's heart to a needy animal, people help themselves without realizing it, i.e., lowering blood pressure, lose feelings of isolation and
avoid chronic depression and self-loathing.

We love all animals and believe the world is made so much more beautiful by their presence in it.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
