Areas Breckinridge County Animal Shelter serves

Breckingridge County is the largest county by square miles in the state of Kentucky but is also a rural area with a large stray pet population. Located 1:15 southwest of Louisville, most of the county, including the shelter, is on Central time. We only adopt out to adopters within 90 minutes of the shelter. We work closely with rescue groups.

About Breckinridge County Animal Shelter

We are a small, rural Kentucky shelter with only 16 runs so adoptions and rescue are extremely important to us. The dogs and cats we take in are very well cared for under our supervision. Owner surrenders are immediately available for adoption. Any dog picked up as a stray must be held for the state mandated five day stray hold period before being released for adoption.

We also attempt to temperament test all dogs to ensure they are adoptable in regard to getting along with other dogs and even the shelter cat. Of course, dogs can behave differently, based on their environment and other factors. Our limited ability to spend long periods of time with each dog won't guarantee a dog doesn't or couldn't have "issues" going forward.
