Rescue FAQs

Underhound Railroad was formed in 2009 by a group of friends, with the goal of rescuing innocent dogs from death row in Connecticut shelters. Underhound Railroad has now grown to include rescue communities in Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, South Carolina and Utah.

With our focus on rural areas where shelters are overflowing with abandoned dogs waiting to find rescue, our network of Underhound volunteers work hard to prevent undeserved deaths, see that medical, emotional and behavioral needs are tended to, and transportation as well as a loving foster family are provided to the pups on their journey to finding their forever homes!
We serve all of the eastern seaboard. We rescue from shelters, help lost dogs and accept owner surrenders. We rescue in GA, SC, NC, RI, NY, ME, UT, CT. The dogs are primarily located in foster homes in SC, NC, RI, CT and ME and CT. Please ask for more info.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
    1. To apply to adopt one of our rescue dogs, please fill out an adoption application via our website: www.underhoundrailroad.org
  2. Approve Application
    1. Once we receive your application, a volunteer will reach out to discuss if the dog you have applied for is a good for your home & lifestyle.
  3. Home Check
    1. If your application is initially approved we will ask to to a short, virtual home visit. This is easy, and takes about 10 minutes.
  4. Interview
    1. A phone will be completed independent of/or during your virtual home visit. This is a good time to ask all the questions you may have!
  5. Meet the Pet
    1. We will conduct a virtual meet and greet or a meet and greet in person with your dog, depending on locations.
  6. Sign Adoption Contract
    1. When you have been approved to adopt and you have decided to take your dog home, we will send you an adoption contract.
  7. Pay Fee
    1. You may pay your fee online via our website, PayPal or by bank check. Personal checks will not be accepted.

Additional adoption info

We do in-home visits. We call vet references. We have a very long adoption application. We want as much info from a potential adopter to find the perfect dog for them.
