Rescue FAQs

Every dog deserves a life full of love โ€” we're here to make that happen. ๐Ÿ’œ

For over 11 years, Arizona Shih Tzu & Small Breed Rescue has been dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of Shih Tzus and small breed dogs across Arizona. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit โ€” built entirely on love, dedication, and the hearts of our volunteers.

While Shih Tzus are our specialty, we also rescue Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Bichons, Schnauzers, Terriers, and the occasional bigger dog or two โ€” purebred and mixed breed, young and old. We've even taken in a few kittens left at our doorstep with nowhere else to go.

Many of our dogs come to us having experienced abuse, neglect, irresponsible breeding, or difficult life changes that left them without a home. They arrive needing medical care, patience, and love โ€” and that's exactly what we give them while we work to find them the perfect family.

We believe every dog deserves a second chance, and we take that seriously. We carefully match each dog with adopters who have the patience, love, and understanding to meet their individual needs โ€” physically and emotionally.

We are 100% volunteer-run with no physical location open to the public. Everything we do is made possible by our incredible volunteers and the support of our adopters and donors. Every adoption fee and donation goes directly back into the rescue, helping us save the next dog who needs us most.

For that, we are endlessly grateful. ๐Ÿ’œ

Want to help? Adopt, donate, or volunteer โ€” every little bit makes a difference. ๐Ÿพ
We are a nonprofit rescue located in Phoenix, Arizona. We adopt our dogs throughout the state of Arizona, with preference given to those in the greater Phoenix area. We do not adopt out of state.

We are not open to the public โ€” dogs can only be met by appointment following approval and selection of your application for a specific dog. For all other inquiries, please don't hesitate to contact us!

Additional adoption info

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Arizona Shih Tzu & Small Breed Rescue! ๐Ÿ’œ

Adoption fees include a veterinarian wellness check, spay/neuter, all age-appropriate vaccinations (including Rabies and Bordetella), de-worming, dental (if needed), professional groom, microchip with lifetime registration, and any other needs specific to that dog. Each dog also goes home with a goody bag including their current food, a leash, a collar, a harness, and everything you need to get started! Adoption fees vary by dog and can be found on each dog's individual profile.

We receive many applications for each dog and carefully review each one to find the perfect family and the best fit for our pups. Please note that all information provided must be accurate and complete โ€” incomplete or misrepresented applications will be disqualified.

If approved, please know that approval does not guarantee placement of a specific dog โ€” it means you're in the running! If selected as the best fit, we will contact you to arrange a meet-and-greet. Meet-and-greets are held at our location and are only scheduled with approved and selected applicants. Please bring all family members living in the home โ€” two- and four-legged! If the meet goes well, in most cases, your new pup can go home with you the same day! ๐Ÿพ

Please note that we do not contact applicants to notify them when a dog has been adopted, and if not selected, you may not hear from us. We encourage you to check our website and social media regularly to see who is still available โ€” and keep in mind that we have additional dogs who are not yet listed! If you don't see your perfect match or there's another dog that has your interest, feel free to let us know or submit a general application describing what you're looking for!

All household members or those who will be caring for the dog must be included in the application as asked. Applicants must be 18 or older. Some of our dogs may have specific home and lifestyle requirements based on their individual needs and history.

Please be patient with us โ€” we are a volunteer-based nonprofit, and our first priority is always the care of our dogs. ๐Ÿ’œ
