Stephens County Animal Control Friends of the Shelter
About Our Shelter
We are the Stephens County Shelter Auxiliary. We've only been in existance since December, 2005. Our goal is to assist the animals, ac officers, and community by instituting an adoption/foster home program, raising money for a new shelter, education program and low-cost vet services.
We are located in the foothills of the Appalachias in a very rural area where there is a huge problem with pet overpopulation and no animal control/protection ordinances.
Our shelter is small, old, and 98% of the dogs and cats brought there are either euthanized or sold to research labs. The entire year budget for the shelter is only $100,000.
Our goal is change all of that.
Come Meet our Pets
The hours of the Stephens County Animal Shelter are Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Because of the reduced hours, please refer to our adoptable pet list to see what animals are available.

Dogs and cats are kept for five days or as long as there is room.

If you see a dog or cat that you are intersted in, please call the shelter and leave a message or send us an email, that includes your phone number. An animal control officer or volunter will return your call and set up a time for you to come to the shelter.

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
