My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

2013-11-13: Bear Man (aka Bear) is a beautiful 9 year old purebred AKC yellow male. He is honestly one of the most handsome labs I’ve seen and his pictures don’t do him justice! He currently weighs about 85 pounds.

If you watch our Dogs In Need section, then you probably recognize this boy! Bear originally came to us after his owner could no longer take care of him due to a major change in financial situation. We knew that Bear Man had a pre-existing condition when we rescued him because he was limping on his front left leg. We thought that maybe it was a torn ligament that we would be able to repair with surgery. SCLRR immediately took him to an Orthopedic specialist where, tragically, X-rays revealed that it was much worse than what was first thought. The limping was not a result of an injury but a cancerous tumor that had damaged part of a bone at his wrist that was causing so much pain for Bear. The doctors recommended that the best treatment would be to amputate Bear Man’s leg up to the shoulder. Before agreeing to that, we wanted to make sure first that the cancer hadn’t spread to his internal organs such as the lungs, liver or spleen. Good news – the ultrasound and chest X-rays revealed that everything looked normal in those areas. By amputating the leg, Bear Man would be pain-free and have a great chance of living a normal life. The biopsy report showed that the cancer that he had in his leg is called Chondrosarcoma. Chondrosarcoma (CSA) is a fast spreading and malignant form of cancer, which, if not diagnosed and treated early, can be life threatening. Chondrosarcoma arises from the cartilage of the body, the connective tissue that is found between the bones and joints. By amputating his leg the tumor has been entirely removed.

Bear is a happy mellow pup and he is finally in no more pain! Don’t let his three legs deter you! He isn’t bothered by it and adjusted very well to the life on 3 legs. He can do almost anything any other dog can do and he requires no special medical care in the future! Of course that he will only need to go for short walks and he cannot do a lot of stairs – one or two would be fine. Basically a low maintenance dog.

Bear has been a joy to have this whole time and very well behaved! He is a very soft submissive dog with humans. He is currently living with 4 other Labs and gets along with all of them!

He settles great in the house. He is a huge cuddle bug and he makes a great pillow! He goes in the crate on command and actually enjoys being in there. He doesn’t need to be crated because he is always well behaved and you can totally trust him being alone in the house. We work full time and he has the run of the house when we are gone and he is just perfect. He also stays in the backyard just fine, no whining or barking. He is house trained.

Bear loves getting attention from all the children that he met and is very gentle with them. He would be fine with children of any age as long as they are mellow and respectful of him.

Bear is a gorgeous boy and super, super sweet! He absolutely loves his people and is very loyal. If you can give Bear an awesome forever home, please contact your family rep today!
