My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Staying with her Foster

Meet Amber! This gentle, 9-year old Golden Retriever mix is waiting for a quiet home with a fenced yard and few stairs. Her wish list includes another calm dog and/or cat for company. She is special, easy to live with and love, and she loves people young and old, dogs and cats! Just watch how she adores other dogs in her video!

Amber traveled with her former family from Washington State to Vermont, where they moved into a 3rd floor apartment. Amber was unable to manage the three flights of stairs, so her heartbroken family called Sunshine to help their sweet girl find a home where she can have easy access to a yard and a home with few stairs.

This beautiful girl makes an impression on everyone she meets. When Sunshine's volunteer met “Ambie” to evaluate her, she commented that Ambie is, "very calm and sweet-natured." Amber's Foster Mom says she is just about the most lovable, easy dog you could hope for! “She comes running in the morning when she hears me coming downstairs. She follows me everywhere! Amber is so sweet and submissive. She is calm, relaxed and loves having someone with her, and we love having her." In fact, Amber’s Foster Mom would keep her if she didn’t already have two other dogs.

And Amber is quite the social butterfly! She likes other dogs of all ages and sizes, and lived happily with a cat in her previous home – in her foster home, she has enjoyed playing with several 4-legged visitors, and she comes running to greet them when they arrive! She loves to spend her day roaming around the yard, taking naps on the couch and being with her people. She will bark when first meeting new people, especially those wearing hats, but then settles right down. Loud noises, visits to the vet, and riding in cars are her least favorite things. Amber loves her breakfast and supper, making Foster Mom laugh as she demands her breakfast!…. but she is not overweight at 50 lbs. She is a good girl about letting you know when she needs to go out for potty.

Ambie takes daily medicine for her extensive arthritis, and needs daily eye ointment for a condition in one of her eyes. She manages well with the help of her daily medicine and gets around fine (apart from needing a bit of help getting into the car), including going up and down her foster's five stairs to the yard. Like with so many of us humans with a chronic health issue (hey, getting older isn’t easy!), when you meet Amber and get to know her, you’ll see that these health issues do not limit her, they’re just part of who she is! Amber is up-to-date on all her vaccinations, is spayed and heartworm negative.

Amber so deserves a person or family with big hearts who will provide her with the sanctuary this charming girl deserves. Amber is being fostered in Vermont. If you think this sweet, gentle soul will fit nicely in your home and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR,

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
