My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

Beautiful Golden girl Summer is back with Sunshine looking for her true forever home. This was at Sunshine’s urging because she needs a home where she can be the center of someone’s world. She has been bossing around a smaller, younger resident dog in her current home, and it just isn’t fair to the little dog. Summer is a loving, high-spirited and happy purebred Golden Retriever who is 5 years old. Her relinquishing adopter told us, "We love Summer so much, she has become a part of our family in a big way. She is a wonderful dog and a great companion, but we realize she should be in a home with no other dogs, or with dogs to match her personality. We are heartbroken beyond description. She is SUCH a special girl, so sweet and affectionate and loving. Please find her a wonderful family who will love her as much as we do, she deserves an amazing home and to be loved and cherished and spoiled. She will make such a perfect companion for the right household."

Background: Summer came to Sunshine with a Golden mix dog named Brandy. Her name became Lady Phoebe when the two were adopted together. It soon became apparent that Lady Phoebe needed more exercise and attention than her buddy Brandy. She then moved to her next home and was renamed Summer.

Summer soaks up attention and is a love-bug of a Golden. She rides well in a car, and knows commands (paw, sit, stay, leave it). She gets along fine with dog-savvy cats but might chase one who entices her by running away. Her favorite thing is to play and run, and then to cuddle. She is very affectionate and is a huge cuddler — she simply needs to know who is boss. Firm guidance, rules, and plenty of exercise as well as love is what this beauty needs. She is so smart, she wants to learn and is proud when she gets it right. An obedience course to help Summer and her adopter bond and learn rules together would be of great benefit. Sunshine will sponsor an obedience course to help ensure Summer’s next home will truly be her forever home.

Hi, my name is Summer. I am a big, beautiful, golden girl who loves being the center of attention. It comes naturally though, because being so sweet and so pretty, I am use to getting all of the attention, wherever I go. This means, however, that I would really only like to be in a home where I am the only pet. I get a bit jealous if I have to compete for attention, as I just want to give all of my love to you and get all of yours all to myself in return. I love riding in cars, going for long walks and runs, and I love going to the beach and playing in the water. I can play in the snow forever, too. I love meeting new people and new doggies when we’re out and about, I’m very friendly. I can be a bit shy around some men however, but they just need to be patient and quiet with me and I eventually come around.

Even though I’m five years old, I am still kind of like a big puppy. I love to play and wrestle and chase a ball or stick if you throw it for me. In my former home, I had a couple acres with invisible fencing that I romp around on with my friends, so I do need to have daily exercise. I love my leash, but I’m very big and strong, so you’ll really need to work with me to make sure I walk at a pace you can keep up with. As energetic as I am though, I also can be a total couch potato. I am really into afternoon naps and snuggles. Nobody has ever told me that I’m NOT a small lap dog, so I really do enjoy sitting right up with you on your couch or bed. But I’m also a very good girl, so if that’s not OK and you tell me to ‘get down’ I will right away, without a fuss. I get super excited at dinner time, as I’m totally obsessed with food (as most goldens tend to be!), so I have to eat from a special sectioned food dish that slows me a down a bit, or I’ll gobble it all up too fast. I am very smart, so training me to sit and shake, or sit before you put my food dish down, is pretty easy. I just want to please you. However, since I am such a big girl, I can easily reach your kitchen counters (I’ve been called a counter surfer by some) to take any food (or food wrappers, cans, boxes, plastic, etc) that happens to be up there. I am completely potty trained and have never had an accident in the house. I do not have any experience with small children, so my people don’t really know my history with that. But seeing as I’m so friendly and loving with big humans, I can’t imagine there would be a problem.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
