My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What a sweet and kind Havanese our Otis is! At 2.5 - 3 years old and just about 14 lbs, Otis is an incredibly beautiful guy with a cotton-soft and flowing coat that speaks of the Havanese breed. (The shelter vet labeled Otis a PBVG. We and our Texas vet completely disagree and feel that Otis most resembles the Havanese breed). Havanese are a breed created specifically for their adorable looks, great personalities and hypoallergenic/non-shedding coats. They are a mix that were initially bred in Cuba of the Maltese, Bichon and a Cuban breed... they have become one of the more popular small-sized family companions in the US.
We all know that when the wag starts at the tail and becomes a full-blown body wiggle...Otis is greeting either a friend or anyone who has the potential to be a future playmate. He is initially cautious...assessing the situation to make sure all is safe. This makes perfect sense as he's been through time spent at a high-kill shelter waiting for his euthanasia date. When he was identified with a great temperament, Farfel's spoke up to bring Otis to safety (and a new forever family) in Colorado. Once he senses that all present are his friends (just takes a few minutes), Otis is so warm and friendly that he always hopes every pat and kind word will turn into a lifelong friend. Both people and other dogs are drawn to Otis for his kind attitude and playful ways. He loves to play fetch and waits expectantly...with his eyes so bright and joyful..to run off again after the ball. Otis has clearly spent time on a leash as he has excellent leash skills and seems to love the experience.
Farfel's Rescue has determined that Otis needs a quiet home where he is an active and important member of the family. We feel that this would be more possible in an adult home (retirees would be perfect) where there's a more predictable environment. Otis would be overjoyed to spend parts of the day together either hiking or walking through the beauty of Colorado. Then at day's end, he's the ultimate snuggler and sleeps soundly through the night.

It is Otis's sweet love affair with life and all the hardships that he's suffered along the way that motivates us to put Otis through Heartworm treatments..his precious life deserves to be saved! Otis has tested low HW+ and Farfel's (with the help of Rescued Pets Movement of Houston and Dr G in Denver) has volunteered to save this very special dog's life. The heart worm treatment process involves several shots followed by a short period of quiet crate time for the dog. We have found this protocol to be very successful and the dogs go on to live long, happy lives.

We are seeking an adopter to lovingly care for Otis as he becomes Heartworm negative. It's quite an easy rehab process as it only entails quiet time with soft words and belly rubs. Farfel's will pay the vet bills and provide premium food and treats for this special pup as he grows healthily heartworm-free.

Otis (like all dogs) would benefit from positive reinforcement obedience classes that included the whole family - he is a super-smart guy who truly wants to please. Great training will give Otis the skills to be an excellent adult dog. These type of classes will also bring out the great qualities of this Havanese as well as creating a tightly-knit bonding with all family members
.
Otis is a non-shedding pup considered to be one of the more hypoallergenic of breeds. He will therefore require periodic grooming and great nutrition to keep his shiny coat healthy and matt-free.

Otis is currently being fostered in Denver. If interested in setting up a Meet and Greet with this beautiful and sweet Havanese, please fill out an application at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/ and submit to farfelsapps@gmail.com.
