My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Murphy 2 yr old male red tabby Maine Coon mix

We love these red boys. When this shelter took him in “due to moving” they thought of us right away and sent an email.. & of course I said YES right away. He is a wonderful as he looks. He is a goodnatured, easy going, big hearted guy. Mischievous too.& playful & curious. He is just a growing boy. Maine Coons don’t stop growing in size and personality til they are between three and four years old. He has a ways to go. He will be a pretty big but not huge cat.

He feels young. There is a hint of a lack of self confidence. He can be hand shy around his head - he may pull back or duck his head -if you don’t move slowly. Someone has hit him, I think. I do get the sense his life has not been super easy. He is very loving and affectionate.

The first photo is him coming out from under the bench to see me. He had just had a 3 hour drive and was still polite or friendly enough to say come say hello. The next photo’s are of him having a bath. He had clearly been outside and had dirt here and there. He was very surprised and altogether miserable as we bathed him, but very nice about it.. The last pictures show him half dry and already fluffing up. I will get some new photo’s of his splendid fresh washed coat.

Murphy is a cat who is FIV+. This means he has tested positive for the Feline Immunological Virus. I wouldn’t want him to have this virus, of course, but I know the great majority of cats with it live long heathy lives. Kidney and heart disease, for example, are much more serious. Some shelters no longer test for FIV because it is so common and they know it is still mistakenly discriminated against by many. I have fostered and adopted many FIV+ cats and have had no trouble finding them homes. Most of the homes are multi cat homes since many people feel these cats do not need to be only cats. The scientific community has been learning more about them in the last decade and the old attitudes towards them are fading away . There is a FIV vaccine in use now. This vaccine has the side effect of making every cat who receives it test falsely positive forever after. If you are interested in Murphy I suggest you go online and read the new research about this virus. The understanding of FIV is changing as new studies are done but there is still disagreement and you will need to decide for yourself what you think. FIV+ kitties need to be inside only and fed a healthy diet and have good vet care as they go thru life. Their immune system may not be as strong at times as a normal cat’s so they need to be well cared for. When the shelter called me with the news of Murphy’s testing FIV+, I still said “Of course I will take him”. I have read that 4% of the cats in this country are positive for FIV and the vast majority of their owners never know it. Some shelters no longer test for it -they only test for the Feline Leukemia Virus ( he is negative ) which is a very serious ailment. Murphy, young male that he is, doubtless got his condition fighting over a girl kitty- following mother nature’s call. He does have bedroom eyes and lots of energy……..

Maine Coon cats are great companions for all sorts of adopters. They are good family cats. Their personality accepts the commotion and chaos of families with children better than some other breeds. They are known for their quirky character and generally are quite the entertainers and comedians. This red tabby boy has medium length fairly trouble free fur and round yellow / green eyes. His Maine Coon ruff around his neck is very prominent and will only grow more impressive as he grows into his maturity. He is super sweet and just wants fun and love from his own personal human.

Murphy eats wet and dry food very happily and is litterbox perfect.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
