My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable puppy. They're so new and fresh with every possibility open to them. That's the case unless they're in a high-kill shelter that quickly runs out of space...then they can become a bit shy as if the world is a tentative place. With love and assurance..they quickly come back overflowing with puppy love and opportunity. We're so grateful for the efforts of the great Houston rescuers in saving Barney...they could see that his temperament was so loving that they couldn't allow him to be euthanized. Barney was immediately brought to be vetted and temperament tested...he passed both with flying colors. The vet's assessment was that Barney has a great/kind temperament but is shy due to poor treatment as a baby. Since he's only 16 weeks old, the vet felt that he would leave his fear behind (and has the potential to be a happy-go-lucky guy) if Barney is adopted into a very loving and nurturing family. Barney was then brought to a great Texas foster home to begin his education around bravery, house manners and socialization. It turns out that Barney, at only 16 weeks old, is so cooperative (even if a bit unsure at times) that it's been a fun and rewarding experience for his foster mom to watch him blossom. He's like a blank slate...open and curious about the possibilities of the world. If Barney continues his regimen of time with loving humans and classes that promote positive relationships with other dogs as well as bonding with his people...Barney will become a well-adjusted and extremely pleasant adult companion. Barney is a gorgeous puppy with a Benji-like (but softer) coat that speaks of youth and good health. His demeanor is just who he is...he appears to be just a bit more analytical than your average crazy puppy. If you are kind to Barney, he is your best friend and is very interested in some serious bonding. If Barney is treated kindly (treats and belly rubs always help) with clear behavioral guidelines, he will become a well-adjusted adult dog who respects his people as his leaders. This is the kind of family we're searching for for Barney. Barney currently weighs 14.6 lbs (the vets anticipate him to weigh approximately 22 - 25 lbs when full-grown.) He's the perfect size to be very portable and low-maintenance enough to take along on fun adventures. We feel it's very important that Barney is provided with exercise and mental stimulation to develop into a well-adjusted companion. He will be a perfect size to enjoy hiking and adventures in the Colorado mountains. We'd also like a family who spends lots of time at home and chooses to include a fuzzy puppy in their activities. Barney appears to a be a non-shedding puppy (he is thought to be a mix of 2 non-shedding breeds according to the shelter vets)...although it's difficult to tell since he still has his baby coat. He will require periodic baths/brushing and great nutrition to keep his hair soft and matt-free.
Barney is safe and happy in a foster home in Boulder where his foster mom thinks that real men wear pink!
